I did about 10,000 miles with no spacers and no problems.
When I removed the wheels (now have 20s) there was evidence of a very small amount of contact with the plastic liner on one side only, a 'polished' mark. The plastic arch liner is not fixed securely on the inside and I could image that it will depend on how far the liner is away from the metal on each particular car.
I have had to use 3mm spacers for my 20x10 and I think that I will keep them on when the 172s go back on for the winter as there is plenty of room on the outside.

I was just playing around with our company car configurator and put an m-sport E61 together, but couldn't find an option for 19" rims, for example the M172s which are offered with the E60. :thumbsdown: So whats the deal here? According to Marco's car documentation 19s have been approved for use, albeit in 245 width only, but they are not offered by BMW from the factory/configurator? Audi offers up to 20" rims for its tourings (avants) from the factory/configurator.
Anybody know if BMW dealers will supply E61s with 19" rims or do you have to get them retro fitted yourself separately?

The official answer in both Germany and here in Sweden is that it's not a factory option. But there is a way around; by four front wheels or spacers for the rear wheels. I went for four front wheels and it works great. I can also recommend www.salesafter.de.
Thanks for the info. The M166s I have on my E60 at the moment are mine, so I could transfer them on to the next company car. If I go for an E61, it will be interesting to see if BMW would be prepared to fit these to the car because the Spacer requirement. Not sure what their policy is with that?
Otherwise I'll have to sell off the rears and get another two fronts, i.e. a set of 245s all round.
