Default 08, E61, oil level sensor problem

I replaced my oil level sensor with one from FCP, not BMW, but the OEM. No change, still says add oil and shows caution add oil. I replaced it because of this warning.

My E61 would throw out grossly premature low oil warnings. I learned to just ignore the first couple warnings until they got semi-consistent (those two points would be months apart, and never indicated more than about a half quart low).

Are you 100.0000% certain that your oil level is correct?

I actually have drained the oil and measured the volume. I’m usually full of very close to full.

What sort of signal is being sent/expected? If low is ground, could be a short further up the line.

I’m not sure of your question. I’m looking for an indication of quantity. I’m about to get under the car for some other Mx that needs to be done so I’ll be checking out the wiring. I had a good indication when I had the oil changed. Then right after it showed about half level, then it went to yellow with a warning of add oil. I replaced the quantity sensor and nothing changed. There is no fault , my scanner picks up no fault that is.

As long as it's reading a level you don't have a hardware issue. To me it just sounds like it's being shorted oil. How much oil is being put in?

I'm saying if it's reading artificially low, and the sensor output is such that low level equals ground, you could have a short in the wiring. A wiring short between the sensor and the computer reading the sensor will appear as a ground reading. If that's the case, look for wire chafing or something similar. Or seanjordan20 could have your ticket.

But how would one know if whatever is reading is accurate?

It's never accurate per se but close enough. In BMWs you know if it's bad because it talks to more than one module and will send an error if bad. These basically average over a certain range to give the reading. When you are low on oil you have to add oil and drive it for a while and even then it's not accurate. If it's reporting low then it's low. Should be putting 7 qts of oil in the engine.

What was the measured volume?
