So much emotion. Who really cares which is "better" - seriously. Faster or more torque does not equal "better". The M5 and the 550 are two variations on the world's best sports sedan, each with it's own charms....just depends what you want.

For me part of owning an M5 is not to have the "most expensive" or arguably the "fastest" car. I love the sound of the engine, the cool technology, and the pleasure of owning a BMW "motorsport" edition. As far as people hating the car, I have never had anyone one tell me that they hate my car, but people come up to me all the time and say "wow, nice car".

Everyone should drive what they want. I just don't understand all the negativity about what is "better". If you think your particular model is better then the others that's great, you made the right decision and are driving the right car for you.
+1. Too many people (myself included) get caught up having the "fastest" or "best" when all that really matters is that you love it.

VERY well said.

All the 06 are smg trannys when they have a problem its quite expensive to repair them, when the hydralics on the gearbox go it could be as much as 14k to repair the gearbox. This is why BMW will not CPO these cars and offer an after market warranty because they dont want to incur the cost to repair them under warranty. If you are a smart consumer you get out of the early cars that may have these issues. So you get out of you 06 and get a 6speed. Its hard to buy a vehicle when the manufacturer does not believe in its reliability and already know how expensive its gonna be to repair them under warranty.

Absolutely, I would only drive this car under warranty. Also part of the reason I leased it. Good luck selling it if it turns out to have a list of problems (even though I wouldn't have to pay for the warranty repairs).

Though BMW CPO is not offered at this time, only the original owner can purchase a BMW extension of warranty to 6 year/100k mile.

I'm not sure what's involved with CPO, but in Canada its called a "Certified Series" and includes a 6yr/160,000km warranty. I'm pretty sure it's BMW providing the warranty, not third party. I bought a pre-owned 2 year old car and it included the "certified series warranty"

This has been something that has been going on since the car came out. Magazines nit pick on the car and rank AMG's as better overall. I for one feel the M5 is the best sport sedan money can buy no questions asked.

I see so many for sale on Ebay, on Autotrader, Swapalease etc.

Why do owners want out of their cars so soon with barely any miles racked on? Are these cars mechanical nightmares? Is it too much car for some people? Everyone made alot of hype over SMG how rough it is in traffic and in auto mode but i never felt this to be an issue after several test drives in NY. And now they have a 6 speed manual and its obvious the car was not designed for this gearbox from the get go.

Any thoughts?

Many E60 M5 owners have had many many problems with their car. My uncle got rid of his after about 1.5 yrs because he could not take it anymore. The car has amazing power, but if it is constantly in the shop then the fun of driving it can dwindle very quickly.

Many = 10?
Many = 20?
Many = 100,000?

I tend to think the numbers are small <=100, which is a smal percentage for the gross amount sold and owners who have know problems... I had issues with my 645Cic and BMW replaced it with a brand new 650i and had know issues since.

Guess it all depends on a person patience and diligence to get his/her money's worth...

No, sorry : the best E60 is the B5 with a little Quaife added .
I'm sorry you can't buy it outside Europe .
The M5 is too heavy and too thirsty .
Can't wait for the M5d, now that will be the business

Will that every happen..? I am not sure this strategy supports Motosport's direction. I am not sure I agree with the need for an M to become diesel.
