I have been getting real low gas mileage in auto mode ( about 7.8mpg) as the gears change at about 4000RPM. What I want to know is that do you drive in auto mode or manual mode? I started to drive it in manual and the gas mileage started to go up.

Also, how long does it take for the M5 to calibrate what the actual gas mileage is? It seems odd that my car is saying 7.8 mpg in Auto mode. Maybe that its not actually 7.8, but more and its not displaying up to the minute?

Last thing, what speed do you have your gears changing at? Is the faster, the higher gas mileage? What I want to know from this is, how can I achieve better mileage?

I drove my M5 in auto mode for about 5 minutes when I first got it and been in manual mode ever since. D mode is too jerky. The car shifts unexpectedly so I hated it.

Anyway, reset your mpg meter. Click the switch till mpg is displayed and hold it down a few seconds and it'll reset. It'll then start to recalculate your mpg. Remember though that it's calculating the ave for the last 30 miles or so (I think). It'll start low but it'll go back up. In mixed city/highway driving, I get about 11.3mpg. The most I've seen is about 16mpg on a 50 mile trek on the freeway.

I usually shift gears around 4500-5000 rpm and downshift around 3000 rpm. I have a bad habit of keeping my rpms high (~4500 range) even on the freeway. I used to never drive in 6th or 7th gears but trying to do that more now. hahaha

I, like ECF, was upshifting between 4-5K for the first 6 months of ownership. Regardless of P400 or P500 (M mode), I was averaging high-11 to low-12 mpg. The last month or so, I started shifting much earlier, around 3K in fact. The result is 14 mpg. We all know the beast doesn't come alive until much further into the power band, but there's a time for fuel consumption and a time for fun.

If I'm feeling really lazy then I do P400 D2 (never use D1 as it starts you in second gear from a stop and thus causes more wear on the clutch). But most of the time I am in P400 S-3 (I figure S-3 is the perfect balance between not pushing the clutch too hard and not pushing the SMG pump too hard). In all city driving I get about 13.5 mpg and I always shift before 4k rpm

P500 s4-s6 depending on traffic. The auto mode is garbage in both 400 or 500. Get used to shifting the car manually and downshifting to slow down. The auto mode's downshift lags are ridiculous. You'll save yourself on the brake & clutch wear and the car will shift much smoother in manual. The auto mode is way too jerky and inconsistent. I drove it in auto the first week or so because I thought everyone else was just trying to show off but quickly found out that the auto is more fatiguing to drive than the manual. Get used to it and you will never use the auto mode again. Btw I get between 10 around town and 14.5 highway. I don't know why anyone would use p400 regularly. No one buys this car if gas consumption is a concern. To be honest I'd much rather have a 535 than an M5 in p400. The car feels sickly in p400.

P500 S6 DSC OFF all day!

No not all day, but i do drive in P500 about 95% of the time.. usually MDM mode, but only P400 S3 when the GF is in the car ( she hates the power and the "feeling" when the car pushes her into the seats) I know this is a sign to get rid of the braud, but she's a good one ahah

I tend to let the revs finish out soo much(6000-8500 rpms), which may or may not be a bad habit but i just love the sound of the V10 engine. I had my M button set to P500 S6 DSC off, but since my tires with 7000kms on them are about 60% worn, i've toned it back to P500 S5 DSC MDM.

I will try this today. Thanks for the tip Tony!

Another question, what exactly does the gear change speed do? How does it effect the car?

Thank you all for your good input regarding this thread!

Why are some people hating on D? D-5 is awesome when someone is behind you and you know they are gonna try and pass you...it automatically drops you from 7th to 2nd or 3rd gear. It's the best feeling in the world
