I just got back from a 400 mile drive to Cleveland and had only one major problem - I didn't have the right connector for my Valentine 1, so I had no radar protection.

The car is simply on another level from anything else I've driven. I haven't even touched the limits since I'm following break-in rules, so I can't give you a really good write-up for another 800 miles or so.

I can say that at 5000 rpm in 4th gear at 90 mph, punching the throttle halfway is like a kick in the back. Supposedly the engine doesn't really start to sing until 6,000 rpm. I can't wait . I'll post a long write-up after break-in. For now, I'll just agree with this reviewer from a well known British Car Mag:

"On every objective scale, the new M5 obliterates. It takes what we previously considered supercars and belittles them, patronises them into insignificance with the kind of confidence born of constant measurement and, possibly, coloured graphs. It is obsessive in its superiority and complete in its authority."

I just read this again and it gave me wood.

Wolverine, I envy you so much! I get to Cincy pretty often, so I'll keep my eye out for you. If you pass by Polaris Parkway on your way to Cleveland, give a honk!

wolverine,

Glad to hear you are willing to give feedback on your experiences with the car.? I hope you don't limit that to your positive experiences only.

Nope, I'll tell it like I see it. Right now, SMW is a pain in the #!*. There is definitely a learning curve, and I'm sure I'll like it more with more driving expereience.

I picked up the car a week ago but didn?t get an opportunity to drive it till early this morning, managed about an hour of seat time over some canyon side roads and open freeways, under the pre 1200mile run-in conditions, or as my friend calls it the transportation P300 ( as oppose to P400/P500S) mode.

1) Handling is typical BMW, agile and nimble, steering was light but adequately communicative, compared to other manufacture?s 4 door performance sedans similar in weight and power, flat cornering with min. body roll, but then again I was far from pushing it.
2) Shifting through 4th gear well under 5500 PRM, rate of acceleration to the 80 mph limit, felt almost similar to the E39 M5 with no noticeable front end lift.
3) I have no prior experience with BMW?s SMG transmission other than as a passenger a couple of years ago, but am delighted to report that this third generation program is as smooth and usable as any other F1 system if not better, this was a very pleasant surprise to me, Lamborghini?s E Gear excluded, for I have no knowledge about that system.
4) Perforated comfort seat allows many adjustments just as seats found in the 7 series, I personally could use firmer support or may be I should lose some weight, but it is very soft and comfortable for daily driving.
5) HUD was turned off during my drive.
6) Good exhaust and engine note, I cant wait till it could be heard at over 6K RPM

Another 1000 miles to go before the first scheduled service, once completed, the first thing I?ll do?.. Engage the POWER button that kept staring at me all morning.

As I recall, he had a manual before. Maybe, he really did mean that his SMG is a pain to get used to. I sort of doubt it though. Sequential Misaligned Wipers?
