HA! I've seen quite a few people that have also said similar things to aznronin; basically, why worry about gas mileage when you can afford such an expensive car. But it's not really the money. I think most of us are more irritated at how many times we have to pump gas.

I'm mostly stuck in traffic everyday and my OBC says I have an average of 10.5mpg; or about 200 or so miles a tank. But I've also seen it it go as high as 300 miles on my range when I'm on a long freeway trek. I think I'll do a manual calc one of these days to see if the OBC is right.
+1...it's a pain to get gas every two or three days.

As far as gas mileage is concern. Surface street driving for me I get about 150-160 miles a tank. Highway driving I will get about 220 miles a tank. I have my M5 set at P500 Sport S5 100% of the time. You will notice that the gas mileage is not very good for the first 2-3 thousand miles or so. It will get better as you break in the car.

My Ride: Living in Germany as an expat, this is the perfect opportunity to own the car of my dreams. I bought a new BMW E560 Individual in April 2007 and I have been in love with my M5 ever since! Where else can you experience the acceleration, speed and fabulous performance of this wonderful German engineering, but on the German Autobahns (almost with immunity for high speed as long as you slow down when there are limits). Fastest so far has been 293kmph (183 mph) but my M5 has much more left...I will get it to the limit of 330kmph (205mph) or more yet! Problem is it makes me want to drive everywhere possible at any oppotunity and I am rackng up the kilometers!

I get about 220 to 240 mixed driving of Hwy/City
Wow, there must be something different about fuel consumption of M5's in US versus Europe.

I drive my M5 hard all the time and at high speeds (100+ mph) on the Autobahns here in Germany. I hit at least 125 mph on the short Autobahn between my home and office twice daily. I nearly always drive on Autobahns in "M" mode with performance set to M500 sport and drivelogic on 5. In city driving P400 and drivelogic in Drive mode 3. Even with the high speed and hard acceleration, I am averaging 250-280 miles (400-450 kilometers) to a tank of gas.

I have not reset the computer for fuel consumtion since I drove the car out of the showroom and I estimate my driving has been 50/50 city versus highway. The fuel consumption computer says my M5 has averaged 14.7 mpg(US) over 25,000km (15,000 miles). If I cruise at 120-150kmph (75-90 mph) the fuel consumption goes way down to 18-20mpg. Over 100 mph (160 kmph) the economy rises steeply towards the 14-15 mpg. That still seems much better than folks in US have posted here.

Also, fuel costs in Europe are much higher than US. Premium unleaded (RON 98) is about Euro ?1.50 per litre. That's ?5.65 equal to USD $8.37 per US gallon at today's exchange rate. That about USD $145.00 to fill a tank (assuming you fill up at around 1.5 gallons from empty). So yes, a BMW M5 is expensive to drive in Europe as well as US, but worth every single penny in my opinion!!

Yes, BMW M5's are thirsty and I wish they had a larger capacity tank. Tank in Europe is 70 litres (18.5 US gallons), I believe same as all E60s. The M5 really needs a 90 litre tank, but who know what that would do to the engineering of the car???

When you buy an M5, you have to understand the low fuel economy and weight that against the performance, engineering and sheer fun of owning and driving a BMW M5. If you can't deal with the fuel economy, don't buy one!! Get a 550i or something else in the great BMW stable or for real fuel ecomony buy a Toyota Prius and get 60+mpg!!

All you naysayers regarding M5 performance and fuel economy, who do not actually own an M5, should just stop posting on M5 forum! If you can't afford to play the game don't comment from the sidelines!!! And what's with all the wantabes who fork out huge money to make their BMW 5something look like an M5??? Post somewhere else on the E60 Forum, better still don't post comments at all!

Wow I had no idea they were so thirsty ... I'm thinking about an F10 M5 as next car (I know it's a while off) but unless they do somebody about tank size/mpg it would be out of the question. Not in terms of paying for the fuel, but having to stop to fill up so damn often...!
seems logical but not practical. the M5 is not exactly your daily commuter car. it's a v10 that's always hungry, it's a supercar and rivals among the best. to be the best it's gotta be light so this is why the gas tank is smaller than your regular e60. more gallons equal more weight. so i highly doubt that would be considered although it's desireable.

same here

If I beat the car, I get anywhere from 120-140 a tank.

A mix of mostly highway driving, and little street driving has yielded me over 200 per tank in the past.

In automatic mode you will get better mileage also because of the shift points.

both the M5 and standard E60 share the same size tank. No difference....the M consumes more because it has two more cylinders - and is a beast!

Geesum... sounds a little bitter up there at the top of the BMW mountain. I think I'll stay way down here happily enjoying my ride. Life is way too short and the forum is way too much fun. Lighten up.

I get 14.3 on average, so I get ~290miles in 400HP mode.

On 500HP, I get much less but then again I did not buy the M5 for it ability to conserve gas...
