Is it true the US version of the M5 does not get the launch control option? My buddy just bought his M5 and tried to do launch control but nothing happened. Someone said that the US M5 does not have launch control. Please tell me this is not true.

My understanding is that it does, but that it is "crippled" compared to the Euro spec. LC is limited to (I think) holding the revs at 1800 rpm whereas the standard LC would hold the revs at 4000 prior to launch.

Right 1,800 or 2,000 rpm--can't remember which. You probably are right swaja.

LC is crippled on US cars. 1,800 launch, and you have to shift yourself.

Are you saying that non-US versions will shift automatically after using LC?

Correct. Non-US cars launch at 4,000 RPM and shift automatically just before red line.

hmmm...not fair....US always get watered down versions of anything

Hmmm....I'm sure there will be aftermarket ECU chips that could convert the LC right??

Based on the tests I've seen it looks like the crippling of the LC only made .1 of a second difference on a 0-60 run (4.1 vs 4.2 if I remember correctly?). If that's true, I'd be happy with the lesser strain on the drivetrain due to the lower rpm launch as you're not going to notice the difference. Clearly the self shift capability would be missed on high speed runs (0-vmax etc) but TBH that's not something you're going to be doing every day, especially in the US.
