In case you didn't already know, I think they should only offer an SMG to force people to leave their "comfort zone" and get to know the new way to drive a manual.
It's here to stay and is the future of manuals. Change is hard but in this case, it's worth it!

Jeez Rudy, you sound a bit Bangle-esque -- "We know what is best for you." "You WILL learn to love SMG"!!!
I absolutely understand that - done correctly - SMG is faster than a manny tranny. But I can live with that. I find it more engaging to drive with both feet, and besides, there's nothing like the feeling of a perfect 5th-to-3rd rev match.
Can't we all just get along!!!

And you've allready said it correct... "if done correctly"...
In Germany a lot of SMG's are at their dealerships because their drivers didn't know how to use it correct what creates problems...
Alltough, if you get used to it, I am sure it is waaaay more fun, than a manual tranny...

On really big sailboats, do they still climb up the mast to attach the sails or do they have some sort of electric winches now to assist the sailors?
That analogy is closer to my argument regarding the clutch vs. SMG.
I've pretty much said it all in the transmission poll thead that you can find here.

Electric winches (which I use) replace a physically challanging function. SMG replaces a mentally challanging function. I'd just rather do it myself!
But gents, intelligent people can agree to disagree. So recognizing intelligence, here's what I'd like to understand from you guys -- my biggest problem driving a step or SMG is that I lose an innate connection with the car. When driving a stick, I have a tactile feel through the gear shift of "where" I am. It may sound odd, but with step or SMG, I'm always searching for the display to remember what gear I'm in. I'm "thinking" rather than "feeling" my way through the transmission. So - no joke - do I just not know how to drive a SMG?
