Hmmm
...........The M5 that I saw and sat in at Niederlassung in Munich had the same iDrive knob as out E60's except the silver paint was slightly more matt.....to better match the silver base plate around the gear shift knob.
This one looks good though
? It's probably for 2006 Model Year M5's while the one I saw was a 2005.

I was also thinking that perhaps this photo was of an earlier build and BMW decided to keep the iDrive knob consistent throughout their model line (maybe?). Hmmm....

I?m collecting brochures since 1981 but couldn?t get a new M5 brochure. There are only those damed "stupid and non-buyer" M5/M6 brochures available.
So - who could help me out getting some? German language prefered but no "must".
Ok...I could write to BMW M. That?s a very smart company with helpful people understanding a fool like mine

That's great. Hopefully that collection will be worth something someday.
By the way, how many colors were offered back in '81 for exterior and interior?

That's right.
They've had that key on the left for years.

Also note that the writing on the buttons actually changed too... the older keys were painted on. the new ones are actually sticking up. So over use the writing wont come off.
And then even after they changed the "key" (It was for the other modles) I dont think they changed it for the E39's They kept the old ignition system which used the old inverted key. A 2003 E39 M5 still had this OLD style "key" Not too sure on the regular production E39s but the 2003 last year production M5 still had the Old "key" metal part.
