i just check my status again. it's now 50, plan for production, and the VIN is finally avilalbe.

Here is e-mail response from BMW dingolfing confirming that they are in full production since 8/22/05. (e-mail address removed to prevent massive flood of e-mail).

Pardon me for jumping in here on the M5 forum, but I just called the BMW NA contact number Wolverine provided (hat tip, thanks), and my 550 has been built (completed Sep 1) and is on its way to the port.
So, it does look like BMW has things rolling along solidly and maybe a bit ahead of schedule. Hopefully we will all see our cars a week or so earlier than expected.
