So I called my local bmw dealer and see if they were able to do the mp3 coding for now so that I can for the time play mp3 cds in my car and maybe get the ipod or aux installed later. They told me that without getting the ipod adapter or aux installed that it was not possible to code the car, and that it cant play mp3 cds after the coding. So is any of this true or is the dealer full of shit?

They're full of it,
They're trying to get you to buy the ipod kit from them so they can get $ out of you,
I know countless M5 owners on M5board that have installed the ipod kit themselves, the dealer wouldnt code it so they put the cd changer back in and the dealer had to code it for them so they could "play their cds"
go to a different dealer

That's just ridiculous! You DO NOT need the ipod interface to play MP3's. Take a copy of the posted service bulletin and shove it in their faces.

According to what I read about this, BMW should have coded all vehicles to MP3 specifications and some which have the CD changer have not been coded with MP3 playback like my own car. Anybody who complained, they would do the coding for free, but this MUST be done during warranty, AND you must have the CD changer installed.
Afterwards, you fit your own ipod- easy 30 minuite job if you had your CD changer behind the glove compartment. However, if you are behind warranty, you have to cough up
Then you can practically switch your ipod to your CD changer.
