I get 400 miles, 40/60 city/highway, out of my lowly N52 with some pretty aggressive driving in manual mode... 600 even if its all highway miles.
The M is a beast but jeez pumping twice a week would just suck. Currently pump every 7-10 days.

OMG!
my 545i with the Dinan stage 3 tune and some other mods still got me a solid 300 miles per tank....wowzers. did u get a tune or something? it might be time for maintenance on that poor E60 lol
but yes, i avg about 200 miles to a tank and usually do at least 400 miles a week so we are in the same boat. and of course its always 93 octane....tho it would be nice to find a higher octane if possible somewhere here in the city just to try it out

No tunes at all, all engine parts are stock except for the RPI scoop which is really cosmetics. I have heard from many E60 owners around NYC that they too as well saw drop in fuel economy. I just recently got it serviced at BMW changed spark plugs, filters, and other maintenance and I still see the same results in city driving.
I might as well trade in the 535 for an M5 if that's what M5 owners are spending on gas. I'm really thinking about it too.

Holy crap, I get well over 400 miles to a tank (between 415-430). I spend around $200/mo on gas. Yes, I can squeeze out 600 miles a tank of ALL highway - made it from SoCal to Vegas on less than half a tank and it still said 292 miles to empty. I wouldn't mind doubling my gas bill to have an M5, it's a trade of WELL worth it.

All in all the mileage on BMW's is pretty impressive to me taking into consideration power and weight.
Who else can make 500hp at around 4000lbs and get better mileage?

DO IT! GO FOR IT!
my only complaint is the shitty ass SMG transmission. i wish it were the DCT or a regular 6 or 7 speed auto....the SMG just sucks. the only time i enjoy it is in ///M mode on the freeway....other than that its for the birds lol

If the M5 is your only car, I think you may have a problem lol. Call me crazy while it is practical in many ways, I personally feel its very impractical. . . if for anything maintenance and fuel costs. I have a 2008 535i and I get a consistent 20 MPG out of it, on freeway trips I get nothing less than 24 MPG's. If you're getting 12-13 mpg out of a 535i, something is SERIOUSLY wrong. In the absolute worst city conditions I haven't seen less than 16.5 MPG. I also have a 2003 Nissan Maxima, I drive 64 miles for my daily commute. That car takes $57 to fill the tank and it lasts me all week or roughly 300 miles on a tank. B
Bimmers cost $$$ to maintain. M5 and fuel economy are irrelevant. I'm thinking of selling my 535i and picking up an LCI M5 (got too used to the nice LCI interior ) but I in no way will use the M5 as my daily car. I don't even use the 535i as my daily car just because of the costs of maintenance, I may be an exception though I like to keep my "nice" cars very nice
Long story short, do not buy an M5 if fuel is concern, worry more about brake and clutch jobs. A pair of rotors on the M5 run no less than $1000 ($2000 for a set of 4) A clutch job can cost upwards of $5000. It is a legit super car and a result has the respective maintenance costs.

I have a '09 535. I fill up with 93 Ultimate Sunoco.
Considering I barely use the Steptronic, I don't think there is a huge difference in gas spending on a 535 and an M5.
Here are the statistic in my NYC driving:
$62.00 per tank fill up.
$124.00 per week
$496.00 per month
$5952.00 per year
I get average 12-13MPG. (Yeah it's that bad). 200 - 210 Miles per tank.
Over the last couple of years the fuel economy on the 535 is dropping. I used to get 225-230 Miles on a full tank.
Now I barely can make it to 200 Miles on a full tank.
FYI, This is all city driving.

The only time it really gets into the 18-19 mpg range is on local trips on 2 lane roads where I'm passing every car in 3rd gear.
I have the dinan stage 2 software and their exhaust and 64,000 miles. Oh, and have a Thule cargo box on all the time too.

I'm really looking for a m5 now, hope to get one in the next few months. My question is I know gas prices are headed north which scare me. How much do you guys average in gas per month? I'm realistically expecting 2x the amount I currently spend each month if I got one.
