One article I read said the car was registered to his dad (I think his name was Santo) so even if it was "Josh's" car, it's unlikely that he paid for it at age 18. I do feel bad about the tragedy but I can't get past the fact that the kid's parents either bought him the car or allowed him to have the keys. Either way, it's like handing him a loaded gun with a hair trigger.

(I realize that any car can kill so maybe my loaded gun analogy isn't perfect but an M5 is not just "any car" and a car of that magnitude/caliber in the hands of an inexperienced/immature driver -- Josh admitted that he was inexperienced but "responsible" in his posts -- is just asking for trouble.)
He traded his 335i in for the M5 and it was registered under his dad, no idea who paid the note on the remaining balance.

Before I got my 530i, I was really set on the E60 M5, but my dad wouldn't budge. I didn't understand why for the longest, we could afford it easily, but now I realize why he wouldn't let me behind one. Not that the 530i can keep me from doing stupid stuff, but it doesn't add onto it with extra HP.

1sic60 - I don't know how old your are, but your post implies that you are a relatively new driver. My son is 18. He drives an 03 525iT. With 184 hp, it is plenty for any needs of an older teen. We also have a 530xiT, which has the 255 hp engine. That has much more oomph and you need to careful.

I cannot stress enough. I spent all day thinking about the tragedy in Ocala. I sent links of the story to my son, so he would understand what I was thinking.

Respect the car and it will respect you.

Yes, I'm a relatively new driver. I did race Jr. Dragsters and Legends cars before I got my license, so I have a little more experience than most kids in my situation, but that still doesn't equate to driving with other people on public roads. My dad and I have looked into several driving courses, of which include defensive driving and high performance. That might be a good idea for you and your son as well.

That airstrip was never raced on and people were baffled as to why they would wreck right there. I think he was amazed by the races at the airfield in sweeden by gustav so im sure he thought the airfield over in Ocala was a controlled area.

Just poor judgement. It didn't have to be an M5 - I remember a when I was young a bunch of kids took a camero for a run down a freshly paved (and clearly closed) section of highway at night. The car probably had a top speed of only 100 mph, but when they hit the bulldozer parked on the road the story ended much the same way. Poor judgement was was the cause - could have happened in any car.

Condolences to the families.

Apparently they made several runs. They should have figured out the breaking point. However, they may have want to see it "hit the limiter". Pushing the car an extra 10mph may have passed the safe braking point for the higher speed. At night and drunk, they probably didn't realize they traveled that much further. Some brake fade may have also occurred after several high speed stops, especially with the extra load of 5 people in the car. At that point, panic set in, DSC was probably disabled, and they lost control of the car at the end of the runway trying to stop it or turn, resulting in the tragic outcome.

The airport runway was a safer place to try this than the highway but not at night, or inebriated, or with a car load of guy and peer pressure to push it harder.

Here is some math. Suppose an M5 hits 150 or so in a mile with just the driver. Add 4 passengers and a poor launch due to inexperience and its probably closer to 1.25 miles. A guess of 700ft stopping distance from 150mph (near full ABS) leaves 600ft distance in a 1.5 mile runway. It looks like you have plenty of extra distance to go faster. You try 160mph next. In just 4 seconds after 150 mph (at 225ft/sec), you realize there is only 400ft left. A full panic stop only slows you to 110mph or so in 2 secs or 400 ft. They then went airborne off the end of the runway with no chance to slow the car any more.
