Back in September, I bought a 2008 525i for $58K, a month ago, I bought a 2006 M5 for $50K.

So technically, one can wait and save more on an M5 !!
WOW. At this rate I wonder what a used Ferrari F360 costs?!

With the E60 the M Kit is a standard option so I feel its so much more ubiquitos now that most people aren't trying to 'pose' as an M5, its simply how the car came from the factory.. I think it was a different story in the early E39 days before that bumper was offered as a standard option.

Amazing amount of energy on the topic- isn't imitation supposed to be the sincerest form of flattery? Not all are posing- I went to buy a 2007 M5 because I loved the look so much but I couldn't get by SMG. Even after 2 days in South Carolina at the driving school I tracked all the M cars and the 550/650 with SMG and just couldn't understad why I would give up total control and a clutch pedal (and I know - gain hundreds of milliseconds on shift times...). The car never seemed to be enjoyable or predictable. So I downgraded to the 550i sport with 6M and have never looked back.

It's my money and every car I own is a manual so I demand it- I know of course now you can buy an M5 with the manual but hey- my car has the looks and performance I need and when I want to go way faster I can in another car. Plus I get 29.5mpg on the highway and 20+ mpg around town with my "poser".

I have up to recently been badged 550is - now I'm bare because all my other BMW's have never been badged.

My advice. Let the posers be- they just want to have fun too and it makes the real M's that much more special.

My two cents.

I don't think you needed to explain why you bought a 550 instead of an M5. I'm sure lots of people who have regular E60s can easily afford an M5 if they wanted to. A poser in my mind is someone who puts an M5 badge on a non-M5 car. I'm fine with the kit and mirrors but common, an M5 badge?? Just be happy with what you have (not you specifically, I'm addressing the posers).

BTW, the M5 6 speed was available in 2007.

I think all is good expect putting a m5 badge on a non M. If you are a m5 and you are hating on a non M, thats pretty foul.

ECF doesn't hate on non-M's, he never has that I can recall. He is right many of us CAN afford an M, hell I can, but chose the 530 for fuel savings (I had an SRT-8 Jeep that cost me $750/mo in gas and wasn't about to go from that to a V-10). I agree all but the badge and it's fine. Even if you don't have an M5 there's no need to pretend you do, be happy you're driving a 5 series - most people can't, we are pretty fortunate.

No issues with a standard M kit from BMW, this is very nice , because the standard 5 series is good for 60+ aged guy.
But the M kit doesn't try to do the M5 look and the difference is obvious and if you don't see that, you are blind.

And people that say i can afford a M5 but driving in a 5 series for fuel stuff, come'on , you are lucky you don't live in Europe because 750 dollar is nothing compaired with the fuel price here. 1 liter of fuel is 1,36 euro here, i think it is approx. 2 dollar.

So if you want a M5 you just buy it and affording the car is one but affording everthing when driving it also.......that is another thing.

I have a M5 and i love it, the moment i see a guy with a fake M5 also with the badge, i'm glad he's happy with his car and i'm happy with mine.

I'm happy when i can do 200 miles, but the 200 miles is just fun fun fun, 336 km/h on the german highways and several times kicking some audi RS4 and porsches , I LOVE IT.

I didn't think he was directing that at me or I hope not. Nothing in my comment above said I hate non-M5s.

But thanks for jumping in to defend me John.
