b/c I recall that BMW brought over the 535d and it was spotted but there's no plans to release it here.
HHmmmm... last time I checked, the 535d will be released here in the states.... at least that's what I was informed when I was at some BMW conference at the Alameda shipyard when we also saw the Hydrogen7 and the 135i before it was released.... The 535d drove great btw, it'll take a 550i on the top end due to it's stupid high amount of torque...

You got it wrong. 535d will not take a 550i at high speeds. Torque is only good down low. It's hp and gearing that will win up top. Having said that, the 550i will beat the 535d down low and up top.

Are you sure it isn't released? I'm absolutely positive it was the brand new RS6. I was at the light for about 2 minutes next to it checking it out.
I wish I would have taken a picture! There was a older guy driving with a blond girl in the passenger seat.
It looked like this one.

I cant says Ive had the pleasure to drive either car, but I do LOVE the RS6, thats one sick piece of machinery!

... the 550i will beat the 535d down low ...
I have a 530d and my owners manual says that 50 to 75mph in 4th gear (I think - will double check) it's slightly quicker than a 545i.
That's for a 530d with 218bhp and 500Nm torque (newer ones have 231bhp). The 545i had 328bhp and 450Nm.
The 535d has 286bhp and 580Nm torque. The 550i has 361bhp and 490Nm.
Low down I would think the 535d would have much more grunt.
In fact, I've just checked the BMW UK website and the 50 to 75mph time in 4th gear for a 550i is 5.3 secs and for a 530d it's 5.2 secs. There's no time listed for the 535d but I'd guess it would knock at least half a second off that. All times are for the touring version as that's what I've got.

this is all true, but note they are "in gear" times.. on the 545/550, all you need do is chuck it down a cog or two and the times are greatly improved.. that's the nature of normally aspirated, petrol engines.. the M5 is the same. you want to access the power, select the right gear. the 530d and 535d probably beat the M5 too in gear, but would you say that the 535d would be stronger at the top? you have to drive them differently. those figures are more for people that care about consumption. i.e. the diesel can accelerate in gear without changing down, therefore conserving fuel.

I have no doubt that the 545/550 is quicker (especially on a track and fast open roads).
However, I was responding to the comment "... the 550i will beat the 535d down low ...".
I also think that on twistier roads where you're constantly pulling out of bends the diesels would do very well, particularly the 535d, as they have the low down grunt.
