I had an SMG for 4 years with no issues and loved it, so don't be afraid of it. So my pref would be the SMG, but no Nav? and its an 07 vs the 08, which is listed as Interlagos blue, tough choice, but good prices indeed either way.

You mean interlagos blue? I don't think the work lemans should be used in the same sentence with BMW. ![Frown](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/sad.gif)

My vote would be the Silver SMG.
The ventilated seats are fantastic. Plus those seats mean you get "full" leather instead of "extended" leather. With full leather everything is covered with leather - the dash, full door panels, seat backs, etc. It's really nice. Plus the SMG is a lot of fun. When I first got my SMG I loved the novelty of it for a few days, then went through a period of a couple of weeks where I was a bit frustrated/disappointed in getting it to shift the way wanted it to.....but after a month or so I became one with the car and just love the SMG. Once past the learning curve there is no better fun/mile than the SMG. I will definately order it on a future car if available.

My Ride: Living in Germany as an expat, this is the perfect opportunity to own the car of my dreams. I bought a new BMW E560 Individual in April 2007 and I have been in love with my M5 ever since!
Where else can you experience the acceleration, speed and fabulous performance of this wonderful German engineering, but on the German Autobahns (almost with immunity for high speed as long as you slow down when there are limits). Fastest so far has been 293kmph (183 mph) but my M5 has much more left...I will get it to the limit of 330kmph (205mph) or more yet!
Problem is it makes me want to drive everywhere possible at any oppotunity and I am rackng up the kilometers!

I am seriously considering trading in my 2008 528 and buying one of these M5's
Which one would you get??? The prices are really good because they are sold through a military car sales program here in germany. basically you get them tax free and at factory prices (like if you took delivery in Munich)
Here's the 2007 with SMG ($71k)

Here's the 2008 with 6 speed manual ($69.9k)

I have heard bad things about smg..... just wondering what any of you M5 owners have to say.

I am an expat living in Frankfurt since 04 and I purchased a brand new M560 with SMG gear box last January. I had to wait three months for delivery, but worth every minute. I have loved the car since the day I drove it out of the dealership. Yes, the SMG gearbox is a little quirky around town, but on the Autobahn it is a dream...drive in manual with the paddles, or the shift lever...then with just a flick of the gear lever to the right back in automatic mode to take a phone call or change the music my the iPod through iDrive. How much better could life be? It really does act like a manual gearbox in many ways, no creep when you take your foot off the brake, in fact rolls back after one second if you don't accelerate, engine management does double shuffles when shifting down at higher revs and goes into first gear automaically when you stop, even in manual mode. Just not as smooth as a tradiional automatic when you are in stop-start traffic.
All that being said, the gearbox is still wonderful, just like the rest of the M5 engineering, technology and craftmanship. If I were you I would rusing into the dealership with my EC crad or checkbook and own the silver SMG as quickly as humanly possible.
But that's just my thoughts!

So far it is looking like I will scrap the mods ont he 528, and maybe go for the 2007 SMG M5 (Silver) Love that color too. Classy and mean at the same time.
I am just worried that when I bring it back to the states I won't be able to have fun anymore. To live in Germany for 5 years with the autobahn, then to lose it will boggle my mid. I'll become the most impatient person on the road. (sigh)

Your gonna be bummed about returning to the states. I've been back and forth from Germany to the states over the past 7 years...i'm stationed in HD with ya - with duty in Darmstadt. I routinely see 135-140mph (E39 540i) as i commute back and forth. My wife picked up a purchase order for an MY08 M5 last month. I think I will be waiting till this fall to put in my order....if you dont mind me asking, where are you checking out those models? the Pentagon sales office in HD next to Pizza Hut...or in Mannheim? I'd like to visit and take a look - no worries, i wont buy...i'm factory ordering....I'm gonna try to get BMW individual. a friend of mine says he knows how to get the BMW individual program...with some arm twisting.
did they let you test drive? I had an audi dealer bending over trying to get me to test an R8...
