Thanks for the reply guys. These two cars are very different indeed. In terms of availability, the M5's in the US might be available early next year i suppose because of the waiting list and all, and the Porsche tt next generation is scheduled to begin production next summer. So, I am just curious in knowing which of the two you would choose saying the most important parameter is "which you desire the most". That might not be such an objective parameter, but...? ? Would you wait for the porsche or the m5!? Add any others you prefer, performance, performance + comfort, car to keep for 10+ years? , etc.

When my BMW sales adviser brought up the idea of owning an M5 I immediately thought of trading or selling the 911. But after pondering it over for a few weeks I decided to keep it & explore the possibility of getting the M5.
Like what others have said earlier, "they are 2 different cars". Eventhough I have not driven the new M5, I can safely say the driving dynamics between the 2 cars are like night & day. You buy a 911 because of the merits of the car & not because it is better than the M5.
This is my third 911 & definitely not my last. But the performance numbers of the new M5 is enough for you to stand up & take notice.

Thanks for the comment sixsticks. I agree in that both cars should be compared by their own merits but since resources are limited, in the end one has to make a stand, at least to the extent of what you would prefer!
Out of curiosity, have you driven an E39 M5? and how does that one stack up to your p-car?

[/quote]Yes, but briefly. That was when I was shopping around for a 911 & I ended up in a Porsche dealer with a used E39 M5. I was impressed with it after the test drive but at the time I was shopping for a 911 not a sport sedan. The E39 M5 with 398 HP is still enough to impress a lot of people. I wouldn't mind having one on my driveway.
Good luck on your search Pete! There are a lot of used low mileage 911s in the market, & with the introduction of the new M5, you will see more E39 M5 for sale at a relatively good price. I don't think you will regret either one.

Hmm... So the gist is I'm comparing a real sports car versus a sport sedan... I agree that for a daily driver the M is more desirable, but the Porsche is a bit more of an exotic, no?? The M has always been a good compromise?

...the daily grind is no such job for such a fine sports car
...and from behind the wheel, you may not see the M as a compromise

that is very good... and you are probably right, it might not seem as a compromise behind the wheel. I'm sure m5 owners will agree.

I've got a 996 Targa and a 545. I drive the Porsche almost everyday in the summer (it hibernates during the Boston winters), but I'd never own it as my only car. It just can't do too many things - you need a chiropractor after a 4 hour drive; storage space is miniscule; and hold on tight on very wet roads.
I'm lucky enough to be able to have both, but if I could only have one, it'd be the 5er.

Thanks for the comparison. I agree, it must be akward to just drive a porsche on a daily basis. The torture to the car would be great. But in any case from what i hear, Porsche's are the easiest exotics to drive on a day to day basis.
Do you drive the 545 in winter then? If so, how would you describe the handling?

BTW, can someone explain to me the logic behind the Porsche numbering system? Is is just progressive?

A bit of trivia: the first 911 was originally designated the 901 (it really was the 901st design project), but shortly before Porsche was set to introduce it at the 1963 Frankfurt auto show, Peugeot threatened to sue (they had rights to every 3 digit car designation with 0 as the second digit), so at the last minute the 901 became the 911.
