Hi all,
If you would have the option of choosing between an E60 M5 and the upcoming next generation 911tt, which of the two would you choose and why?

I haven't seen the M5 "live" yet. However, I went on a test drive on the Carrera S because the salesperson kept persuading me. Well, I felt the Carrera S is very responsive and everything a sports coupe should be like. However, I really didn't like the engine noise intrusion, and believe me, it was really noisy; especially at idle. The sounds emitted from the engine even when on the go was (to put it mildly) rather harsh and never sounded sweet.
For someone who has driven quite a few BMWs, I would say that I am eagerly awaiting the test drive vehicle which should be here in September. I am sure the M will sound a lot sweeter. I do believe that the engine will not be as noisy.
The choice is clear even before I test the M. It will be either the M5 or M6 which will be a tough decision to make.

My Ride: '05 545i, silver gray, black leather with anthracite maple wood, sport package, premium sound, navigation, cold weather package, electric rear sunshade, folding rear seat, satellite radio prep, PIAA 4150K fogs, red rear reflectors, hardwired Valentine One
2 very different cars. If you want the ultimate sport sedan, get the M5. If you want one of the ultimate sports cars get the 997 TT. It really depends on what you want out of the car.

Thanks for the reply guys. These two cars are very different indeed. In terms of availability, the M5's in the US might be available early next year i suppose because of the waiting list and all, and the Porsche tt next generation is scheduled to begin production next summer. So, I am just curious in knowing which of the two you would choose saying the most important parameter is "which you desire the most". That might not be such an objective parameter, but... Would you wait for the porsche or the m5! Add any others you prefer, performance, performance + comfort, car to keep for 10+ years , etc.

...as many have said above, they are two completely different cars that serve different wants/needs, the 911 is a true sports car, its harsh to drive day to day, but its set up the way a sports car needs to be set up... the M5, on the other hand, is ultra performance in a sports saloon body...if you want to do some serious reading on the M5, check out this site : http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/index.php?
...the M5 is faster than a gallardo and an F430, and can carry 4 adults comfortably and all their luggage, ....the 911 can fit the driver,sort of, and a passanger, though they might not want to take a long trip,... the rear seats are just for carrying groceries.... it really depends on what purpose the car is, daily drive or occasional, the M5 can meet the daily needs, the 911tt, dont think so
also, keep in mind that the M5 will not be available for some time-i would think early '07 to be honest-unless you are already on a list for years now, or if you are willing to pay 10's of thousands over MSRP to get one next year.... good luck

Hmm... So the gist is I'm comparing a real sports car versus a sport sedan... I agree that for a daily driver the M is more desirable, but the Porsche is a bit more of an exotic, no? The M has always been a good compromise

Will be same for the 997 TT--the 996 TT had a 18 month waiting list when released and dealers were getting $50K premiums (at least here in the SF bay area).
My God... What car enthusiasts are willing to do... That is excessive both in time and money!!!
