Well I just got my Feb 07 Car&Driver Magazine in the mail today and it has a Comparison between the BMW M5 with the 6 speed Manual, Audi S6, and the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG.
3rd place BMW M5
2nd place Audi S6
1st place Mercedes E63 AMG
I was basically shocked and read the artical quickly.
They Basically stated that the M5 lost because now with the 6 speed manual Tranny there is no way to fully disable to stability control and Traction Control systems. it was half a second slower to 60 MPH then the 7 speed SMG and also half a second slower in the quarter mile.
Here ar the test numbers for those of you who still do not have the magazine.
3rd Place
BMW M5 6 speed manual
0-60 4.7 sec
0-100 10.3 sec
0-150 23.4 sec
1/4 mile 13.0@114 mph
top speed 162 mph
65 dba sound level at 70 mph
overall 13 mpg
70-0 166 feet
skidpad 0.83
lane change 60.8 mph
The Highs
BMW competence and Grace, V-10 top end power, crisp six speed gearbox
The Lows
Relentless stability control, meddling and, of course iDrive dementia.
The Verdict
Outstanding dynamics diluted by tyrannical electronis
2nd Palce
Audi S6
0-60 5.4 sec
0-100 12.7 sec
0-150 33.0 sec
1/4 mile 13.8@104 mph
top speed 155 mph
66 dba sound level at 70 mph
overall 13 mpg
70-0 166 feet
skidpad 0.87
lane change 60.7 mph
The Highs
Unflappable poise on back roads, sweetest voice in a great choir, snazzy styling
The Lows
Underpowered for this mission. Transmission has a mind of its own.
The Verdict
A fast and sexy sweetheart priced to near irresistibility.
1st Place
Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG
0-60 4.2 sec
0-100 9.7 sec
0-150 23.3 sec
1/4 mile 12.6@115 mph
top speed 153 mph
65 dba sound level at 70 mph
overall 14 mpg
70-0 170 feet
skidpad 0.82
lane change 60.9 mph
The Highs
Major League muscle, astounding agility, transmission actually does what it's told
The Lows
Command control collective still confusing, New exterior a bit to familiar.
The Verdict
AMG finally Delivers an autobahn burner that also knows how to dance.

I hate to say it. But, no surprises here. BMW is retarded when it comes to the M5 and the M6.

BMW should never have bowed to pressure from the US to launch a 6spd Manual. Was a stupid idea & now a stupid reality. No saloon car with 500BHP+ should have a clutched manual box.
They took the M5 toys & aggression away by fitting a manual. A joke that the S6 comes 2nd as that's a bag of spanners. I can understand the AMG getting the top spot over the 6spd M5, but the S6 up their as well, pleeeease.

I think by what Znod implied is that BMW handicapped the 6speed M5 by not allowing DSC and traction control to totally be disabled. Thus, BMW is retarded. That's is just one of the many reasons that Znod thinks BMW is retarded. Am I right, Znod?

Well, I disagree with their second place. I like the Audi, but that V10 isn't pushing nearly as many HP as it should. Also, Znod can take it by nearly half a second with his 545. Anyway, I do believe the Merc is better all around, should be #1. But, second should have at least been given to the M. Ok, I'll stop rambling.

Thus i don't really care about the outcome of this test as it is not relevant for me.

These are my issues with the M5 and the M6.
US launch control restricted;
Incredibly poor gas milage;
SMG is an antiquated transmission;
Can't leave stability control completely on and completely disable traction control simultaneously;
Low torque engine relative to HP; and
Gets beaten up in a straight line by cars it should at least be the equal of.
But, yes, it has many nice features. Still, for the reasons given, I, personally, would not buy one.
