Lets not get ahead of ourselves here! Its unfair to compare a 535d against the might of the new M5. Imagine shelling out all that money for a V10 supercar and then someone saying a 37K diesel car with less power is just as good! I don't think so personally. Ok against the 545i yes it will give it a run for its money and should eat the new 540i for breakfast but not an M5.

The performance of the 535d is apparently on par with the E39 M5, so I hear.

My 535d is like an M5 to me and just because the M5 is massively quicker its probably, in the real everyday driving world, not that much more fun ? for ?.

The current M5 is a mega car period, The 535d is also a mega car but don't compare them IMHO.

Well i have a dms 535 d touring and yes it is fast but not fast enough for an M5.
To give you some idea my brothers M3 is only slightly faster from lets say 30mph to 110 mph but i mean very SLIGHTLY, saying that on twisty roads i do get spanked .
But if you have a 545i you will not be in the faster car !

Not sure if 545i would be outpaced. Based on data from autocar.com link and Motor Trend test data for 2004 545i you have (0-60 mph of 5.5 sec vs 5.4 sec for DMS 535d and 545i) whereas even at the high range of 0-100 mph you have (13.5 vs 13.6 sec). Sounds evenly match to me I don't see any data that says its like a M5 e60 or e39.

Agreed!

Although i fear that the comp with the e39 M5 is still out of place. Where did you hear it's in the same league with the e39 m5?

If anybody has spoke to the DMS guys about this.. of have driven both... Let us know.. as clearly the 535 is just not the amazing car the M5 is... but as i said.. will a diesel 3 Litre touch the 5 Litre Pertol???

Remember the power in a diesel Engine is totally different.. so don't start quoting the BHP on the Pertol and The BHP on the DMS Tuned Diesel... i'm really talking about rubber on the tarmac... not figures..

Chers Guys..

Talk soon..

Mac
If you're talking about a tuned diesel, then you could probably keep up or beat a 550. A stock diesel won't outrun the 545, much less the 550 - just look at the test numbers. As far as comparing it to the new M5, you might as well compare it to a Porsche Turbo, or a Gallardo. Those are cars in the M5 league. A tuned 535d is not.

A mechanic at my local BMW dealership. He test drives all models.

Hard to believe it could be anywhere near as quick as the old M5 with a 0-60 of just 5.3secs, but then the midrange performance figures of the 535d are exceptional compared to the petrol E60 V8's and V6's.

Hey you guys,

The 535d has 272 bhp with a 560 Nm torque and goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 6,5 s
but the M5 has 507 bhp with a 520 Nm torgue and speeds from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4,7 s.

The 535d is a sports tourer with a great milage but the M5 is a full blooded sports car.

The M5 would top over 300 km/h (approx. 190 mph) without limiters!

So the answer to the original question "Can a Diesel Keep up?" is

NO WAY!!!

What would a 535D top at with the limiter taken off ? My car is only revving at 3500 when at an indicated 158 mph !

Yep! But even so...it's not all about the 0-60 times...after that torque is more important and with similar power well...dunno...it would be a blast to see such a battle! Only the reality can declare the winner. IMO the tweaked diesel would win. So if it were my money i would put it on the diesel.
[/quote]

I would not put my money on the diesel. I drove a 530iA and my associate's 530dA. While the diesel feels diferent, I can overtake the diesel almost at any speed. I am not so sure why, because the max power is almost the same, and max torque is almost double for the diesel, however it has to do with power and torque curves, turbo difference *and* with large petrol reving interval.

The 535d is a different kind of animal of course. I cannot wait to drive one and feel it.

PS Vad ca esti din Bucuresti, avem la adresa din semnatura mea, un forum. Ne-ar place sa avem un asa animal ca si un 535d printre animalele de acolo... Da un ochi.

multumesc...

did you try DS or manual with530dA????

the petrol will never have that torque in 3Ls. Torque is better and you can pump up the bhp 2...
