Dude just get it. I have a 530xi and I drive my friend's M5 here and there and the pleasure I get from knowing I'm going to take a rip around in my friend's M5 (not my own) has me grinning from ear to ear. As soon as I sell my 530xi (been trying for a while), I'm going to get myself an M5 of my own.

To OP, since you are a student, probably in your early 20's? I truely believe you will live a much comfortable life through your college with a 530 instead of M, assuming you work part time to pay off the car, and not get allowance from your parents.
In reality, most of people can afford an M5, but it comes down to how comfortably you want to live while financing your car. The M5 might cost you $1500 a month with everything and an 530 might only cost you $600-700. In the long run, get's better gas, and most importantly, it takes off a big load from your monthly expenses.

very true. And one thing, check the insurance first to see how much it cost. Even though you can afford insurance, is it necessary to spend 4 times the amount it cost from a 530?
However, you live only once and owning an M5 in your early 20s is nice!!! I owned an Evo VIII and Lexus RX300 in college. Yes parents paid for it. WHen I got a job, I was making decent money so I opt for a CLK55 AMG. I was around 23 at the time and boy, it DOES feel good driving a nice car you paid yourself! If parents are paying for it, sit down, talk to them, if they give the okay, why not? If you're worried about gas prices, I definitely wouldnt buy the M5. If you can afford $400 a month in gas driving the M5 very minimal, I'd say go for it.

Well John, you are a classic example Saw your list of cars from the past, I could imagine you upgrade your car according to your living situation, that's exactly the right intention. Now the M5 after 545, that's just an obvious choice

My Ride: 2007 Mercedes CLS63 AMG
Designo Graphite with white leather interior
Keyless Go, Heated/Ventilated seats, Parktronic
I went from a 525i to a Mercedes CLS63. Talk about a world of difference
The deciding factors for me were:
I'm 28 and you only live once
We don't have kids yet
I've always loved the CLS and dreamed of owning an AMG since I can remember
Miles will be minimal (5,000 miles/yr) as I drive my Z4/ride my Yamaha R1 almost daily during the warm months
Insurance was only $15 more per month for the CLS63
Roundtrip to/from work is 30 miles
My commute is 95% highway (30 mpg in the 525i and about 19 mpg in the CLS63)
Funny thing about this is that the CLS63 is basically my winter vehicle. My 19" AMG wheels just arrived with Blizzak's mounted. Should be an interesting winter

All I have to say is you guys in the States are so lucky to live where car prices are the cheapest in the world and manufacturers sacrifice margin for volume, not to mention your gas prices are a fraction of what they are elsewhere in the world. The sticker price on my '06 530i in Canada was $87,000 and M5's are in the stratosphere. You sure don't see kids driving them, unless they have very well off parents who have paid for it.
The cross border traffic in used cars between the U.S. and Canada is phenomenal these days. My brother saved $40,000 last year buying a one year old Volvo XC90 in the States and importing it. There's something seriously wrong with that discrepancy.
