Hey guys,

Just wanted to get back on topic. We seem to have drifted a bit.

As I am nav equipped and have no pre wire on my car, Sirius, at this point will not be an option.? I'm hoping the new xm direct will someday offer compatibility with the e60 but that, I fear, will be some time yet.

So, my only options appear to be:

1. relying on the wireless fm modulator built into the roady 2, or
2. installing delphi SA10003 fm modulator

So the question remains, has anybody successfully installed an fm modulator and tapped it in through the fm antenna in the rear glass? of the car? Any advice, tips, feedback? Best place to wire in? etc?

Thanks all.

Personally I don't like the sound coming from an FM modulator. Since it is going over an FM channel the sound quality will be WORSE than listening to a FM radio station. I would wait until someone comes up with an Aux input to the E60. There are several people working on it. If you live in a large city you may also run into constant interference. Letting someone besides BMW work on your electrical system may void the warranty.

I tend to agree with redondoman but I will say that using the FM modulator today is better than using nothing until later.

Also, the FM modulator shouldn't sound any worse than FM but it sure won't sound much better. I don't think interference is an issue since the signal is literally injected into the antenna cable. I'm pretty sure there's no signal being sent "through the air" anymore -- that's the way FM modulators used to work back in the old days.

There are both types, wireless FM modulators and wired.

Oh, I get it now. I didn't notice buzzerro's mention of the wireless model.

I still seem to remember something about an antenna connector that isn't standard on our cars but I couldn't find it by searching...

I also have Roady2, I've been running with wireless FM modulator for now, as long as I don't get too close to NYC, things are ok. I've spoken with one installer on Long Island who's hard wired XM Commander with a wired FM modulator into a E60 without NAV recently (i found him by searching on the Installation section of xmfan.com, there was a guy from LI who had used the installer to install into his).

This installer claimed that there is a way to connect into the antenna, but he didn't specify details as to how he does it. He wanted $300 including XM Commander (which is $160 on its own).

I'm a little hesitant to have the FM hardwired, but would like to. The wireless modulator leaves a lot to be desired. I also have the antenna on my dashboard, many on xmfan say that it has worked just fine for them. I'd like to avoid putting it on the roof, trunk lid is the only option that looks decent. With interior mounting though, it is easy to hide it if you park in less than desireable areas.

Let us know how the install goes.

Thanks,
Dave

No dice yet.

The guy I took it to had no idea how to do it. I need to find a custom install shop in LA (any suggestions?) who have experience working with these new 5/6/7's.

I've got to get it done soon. The wireless modulator on the roady blows big time.

Again, anybody out there have a successful install with a FM modulator?

Does anybody have access to schematics/wiring diagrams for the fm antenna?

Well a quick search on "antenna" brought up a thread that contains a few posts from me showing how to gain access to antenna connections. You can find my posts here.

Hope that is of some help. Let me know if it does...
