so I've been doing some research about these subwoofers

I'm thinking of getting 1 10inch woofers JL Audio 10W3v3-4 and Alpine MONO MRP-M500

total: $350 shipped with wiring kit (8-gauge)

what you guys think?

I say that is a decent deal. I just bought that exact amp for $200 and used to have the JL W3 - great sub.

One problem with the trunk of the e60 is that it is very, very well sealed. I had a W3 in my trunk and not much sound passed through into the cab. If you have a ski - hole then opening that up helps.

If you plan on going this route - just make sure you install a box that probably distributes the bass through the ski-hole, otherwise the sound will be trapped.

Decent.
Here a pic of one of the best ways to get sub into the cabin.

You can always make a whole. but position the sub right so you can get the sound to the cabin. A Ported enclosure would help also

Well you can always go the OEM route and upgrade the stock subs under your seat. Do a search on the server for "earthquake sws"....this is a shallow mount subwoofer that fits directly into the stock location....all you would have to do is power it with an aftermarket amp - much like that alpine amp

Youre kidding right???? DYI ski hole?!?!?!

Well I havent removed my seats as of yet, due to one of the subs being defective upon arrival, but honestly removing the seats and swaping out the subs is probably the easiest part of Bruce's DYI. I mean really, its just 4 bolts per seat.

I tell ya, I havent hooked up the new subs yet, but just changing out my factory amp has already added significant bass to the car. Although the factory subs sound a little bit muddy when pushed hard with my new RF Punch amp, I might not have even bought the Earthquake subs just by hearing how it sounds currently. I might have saved the $250 and did some other mods.

In any case, Ill be excited to hear the SWS-8's when they are put in place and my system is tuned!

at least on the E39, the hole was "pre-punched" out of the sheet metal. it was just a matter of breaking a few metal tabs and wham, instant ski pass through. you should be able to see it if you remove the carpet from the rear (front?) wall of the trunk. I don't remember seeing one when I was doing the nav install, but I wasn't exactly looking for one either.
