My Ride: 545i titanium silver, sport package, premium package.
Hi to all,
I have a new 545i with sport package; the front wheels are 18x8 and the rears are 18x9. I want to mount Dunlop Graspic DS2 Dsst 245/40-18 tires, but the dealer said that they are too narrow for the rear rim(18x9). From talking to the people at the tire rack and what I read in the forums, it should be ok? Safe?
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Leon
I mounted the same size Dunlop Winter Sport M3s (245/40-18s) on the different size rims without a problem. And BTW, I'm blown away with the ride and the grip of the M3s. It's vastly superior to the E39/M2 combo that I had in the past.

Tirerack, here in the States, claimed that the same tire could be mounted on the staggared rim size and my BMW dealer had no problem doing it. If it's not too late, maybe you could try another shop?
Hi,
The dealership would not install the tires on the rear wheels, they suggested that for liability reasons they could'nt. They instead suggested that I purchase new rear rims that are the same as the front 8" wides. I took the rear wheels and installed them where I bought the tires. The wheels are now on the car and I will pick up the car Friday morning.
The dealer is still chirping (gently) that the sidewalls slope away from vertical too much as the rim spreads the sidewalls. Anyone know of anyone that had problems with this?

I found the pic I was thinking about where the rear tire looked quite stretched on the rim. CRRobert posted it in this message...
I can't say for sure the exact size tire he's using but I think he mentions the 245 in another post.

I just checked the Michelin, Bridgestone, Dunlop, and Continental tire specs. All MFRS show recommended rim width of 8 - 9.5 inches for 245/40 18. No reason for dealers reluctance on a 9 inch width. A reputable tire store would have this info and not have any hesitation nor would I be concerned.
