My Ride: 04 545A Dynamic Drive Pkg (Active Steering; Active Stabilization) Sport Pkg, Premium Sound, CD Changer, Rain sensor wipers, Red Rear reflectors
Default

I know it?s too early to think about winter but I?m thinking of ?replacing? my GTI which I used for last winter. With this change my 545 will need to be driven in the winter as the ?replacement? car is not suitable for winter.

So I?m wondering what tire and wheel combinations will work well (priority is on comfort and traction ? and I?m prepared to use non run flats) in cold weather and snow.

Has anyone, in the snow belt, had problems with ground clearance ? (there doesn?t seem to be too much clearance with the sport package)

Many thanks.

There are many older threads which discuss this in detail and list lots of winter wheel/tire set ups.

I went with 17x7.5 wheels (ASA JH3 from Tire Rack) and 225/50VR-17 Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2 XL .

I had no trouble at all this winter, despite numerous snow storms.

I went with 18" x 8.5" BBS RK's with Michelin Pilot Alpins. We had a typical New England winter (lots of snow) this year and the setup did just fine. Never got stuck.

After driving three prior 5ers with white knuckles every winter, I put Dunlop Wintersports on my 545 sport's 18-inch OEM rims and was blown away by the traction and lack of any winter driving issues. And we had a pretty rough winter here in the northeast.

Hinckley...I am from Boston also and I am wondering if snow tires are enough...I know we have crazy winters up here. But I was wondering, even if my Cayenne has problems with winter tires....and it has AWD.....how would a 5 series be ok on snow then??

I went with the 17" ASA JH3 from Tire Rack and the Dunlop Wintersports also, never had an issue with getting stuck. I think last year was Boston's 4th snowiest on record.
