Yes, 285's are acctually a better fit than the BMW recommended 275's. I found that to be true in my research as well which is why I'm running 285's plus I always believe that wider is better.
Lomag is right, wider gives more traction so the speed you shall loose for the bigger diameter actually you gain more traction, so you are faster in corners, can mean faster performance.

*** T?V, they are all against the tuning, and BMW wants only pure oem cars, too late

Hello!

Today I?ve been at my tyre-dealer.
I had a look on several models, all of the same dimension 275/30/19.

The interesting thing is, that diffenent tyre-manufactures create different wide tyres, although all the tyres wear the identification "275/30/19"!

I?ve seen a

- Falken FK452 -> contact surface is <275mm, overall width (incl. sidewalls!) only 275mm!
- Dunlop SP Sport Maxx -> contact surface is <275mm, overall width only 280mm!
- Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta -> contact surface is =275mm, overall width 295mm

This means: a Vredestein Ultrac in 275/30/19 is wider than some others in 285/30/19 !

Therefore I know now what to do:

I?ll go for Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's in 275/30/19 !

Reasons:

- This tyre is wide enough and look similar to 285's on the rim
- 245/275 are BMW's recommended dimensions for 19" on non-M5
- 275's are much more cheaper than 285's

I'm exactly at the same point as you are. I have 275/30R19 Falken at the moment and it looks VERY narrow. It doesn't cover the rim and looks like it was only 245. So I'm also looking for new tires for the rear. And I'm also thinking of getting Vredestein because it is wider than other 275s.
But as I have original M-sport suspension and the wheel well looks quite empty with 275/30, I have also thought of maybe getting 275/35. Could anyone give me some advice about 275/35 at the rear. In front I have 245/35R19. Or should I get 285/30 which has a greater sidewall than 275/30?

Thanks

Hi Allar,

As I?ve seen the Falken today, it?s really horrible small that tyre!!!
It has only 275mm in overall width including side-walls!!

I measuered 295mm overall width on the all new Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta and that's in the comparision to the outer dimension of my m167 rims really enough.

The 9,5" m167 rims have a inner width of 240mm and an outer with of 265mm.
So 295mm overall width of the Vredestein's should fit well, I think.
No need to go for less common (and therefore more expensive) dimensions...

(If you have a look on the pictures of nicke60gre's 520i, you can also see, that already the Vredestein 265's fit well on his 9,5" oem m166 rim. But I?ll choose not the normal Ultrac, but the Sessanta's, because they should be more silient...)

I'll probably also go for 275/30 Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas. I think I must then change my 15mm spacers to 10mm. I hope that it will not rub with 10mm spacers.

Hi Allar,

I?ve seen on your other thread, that you have the m166. I guess with ET28.
Together with 10mm Spacers you?ll come to ET18.
This is nearby the same as my m167 with ET17.

I?m also little concerned having rubbering issues with the Vredestein but what else could I do than try?
Other guys here wrote that they don?t have troubles even with 285's.

But the big question is on with ET and on which manufacurer and having which REAL (measured) tyre width???

I have 245/35/19 and 285/30/19. They look amazing and I have been driving wit them for almost 8 months without a problem. I don't know why BMW recommend 275 but the 285 fits perfectly and the speedo is better than 275 in my opinion.
