Painting would do the job
I forgot to mention in my first post that now that the paint is chipping off it pretty well, it appears to me that it is nothing more than a standard (chrome) grille with black matte paint of some kind. I'm sure there has to be paint that would work. After all, look at the car's body paint itself which can withstand a fair amount of light punishment.
And I'm not saying the vinyl route is fool-proof. I don't know as I have not tested it yet. I just wanted to throw that out as what I'm trying in my quest for a completely black grille myself.
I think the easiest route for black would be to get a grille for a 525/530 that already has the black slats and just vinyl / paint / something the perimeter (presuming that didn't change... who knows with BMW's mid-year parts changes).

You've got to be careful about the painting though. That was my point with my (disappointment) with the Hamann grille.

Best bet is to remove the chrome coating off the out ring of the grills and then paint it. It will be just like factory paint, maybe better.

Man your grills are crazy chipped, never seen anything like that. I've had my painted grills for over a year, maybe one or two chips.
