In the US, its our constitutional right (first amendment) to freely receive any and all radio transmissions. Another defense is that we as citizens should be able to know if we want when we are under surveillance.
Still have a copy of the old original one in frames hanging in the hall!
But the fact is that everyone is now under more surveillance than ever.

Passport 8500 X50, it has been VERY effective. If you get away from the cities, California has a lot of open space. A radar detector can come in VERY handy covering a long distance.

The Radar gun that the cops use transmit most of the radiation, they send a radio wave or lazer out onto traffic and the signal then bounces off the cars and returns to the cops radar/lazer gun to calculate how fast you are going. A Radar/Lazer detector just reads the radio wave that is being generated by the cop, it generates very little on its own and only enough to increase its sensitivity to incoming radar/lazer.
