Yes, just put a wooden block between the edge and the hammer .
v_therussian: Go for option 1, and if it fails, you haven't lost much. However, concentrate on it. Don't take it just "an attempt", or it will fail. Do your best, and I'm sure you'll be satisfied.
I replied your mail, but after that I wondered that maybe there is some pointers after all to get a nice finish!
- apply very thin layers of paint
- many thin layers
- follow the instructions in the paint can

I trade index futures and some FX futures for a fund.
Think I should practice on smth before I do it?
Proper CF can withstand almost any temps an exhaust will throw at it. That being said, at 30 per tip, I have doubts its even real CF, so I'm definitely leaning towards painting. Actually, "leaning" is the wrong word - I am painting my tips soon as I have the time. But yes, CF in its proper composition is more heat-resistant than steel, if I'm not mistaken.

I just used Anza's DIY this weekend on mine. Easy to remove, sand, wash, spray a few times and bake a few times in the oven. So far, so good. If I messed it up and it flakes, then I'll buy some black ones. Otherwise, I'm only out $8 for the high temp paint. - Calvin
