The GPS stuff is a marketing gimmick. If you can't tell the difference between a false and a real threat on a Valentine 1 within about 0.5 seconds, then you shouldn't be operating machinery in the first place. It isn't rocket science. Most of the time, I don't even have to look. I just hear the chirp and know. But if I have any question, a quick glance at my unit above my rearview mirror and I can see if it's Ka or not.

Besides... If everyone had GPS on their detector and relied on it.... cops would then intentionally set up camp at those locations to capture you off guard, anyway.
I agree but also disagree. Sure, you can usually tell the false alarms pretty quickly but if the V1 had GPS logic, it could permanently store locations where it always detected a radar signal (like a door opener, etc.) It could be programmed with some sort of learning logic that say something like "if a radar source is found at these GPS coordinates that matches a specific "footprint" (like radar type, signal strength, etc.) more than once over a given period of time, then classify it as a false and don't report it when using advanced logic mode."

If a cop would setup shop at one of those locations, the V1 would pick it up as a second source and trigger an alert since it's able to track multiple bogeys.

Mile Valentine is way smarter than I am with this stuff so I'm sure if he put his mind to it, he'd come up with something even better...

Well in the UK they use fixed camera locations with the speed cameras concreted into the ground.

In the UK we also have forward facing cameras that use induction loops on the road and no radar , we also have SPECS which measures your speed over a set distance and automatically issues a fine and we also ahve all this stuff in roadworks areas too. Plus van's with cameras and laser pointing out the back or side.

phew , so no the GPS isnt a gimmic. Fair doos if we just had police in cars then thats fine , but the police are staring to use LASER devices and once youve detected that the games up as your caught already.

I've been using a V1 since they first began shipping them and I've found that advanced logic mode (capital 'L') works the best -- at least here in Pennsylvania where the local police can't use radar...

I keep it in L mode.

I wish someone would come out with a product like the Stealth One. My friend has it on his E39 M5. It essentially integrates your V1 into the car and directional arrows/band/etc are displayed on the information panel on the dash. The best thing is you can set the speed at which the V1 activates....for example my friend has his set to 55kph. Below that speed it is silent, no beeps or flashes, so never goes off driving around the parking lots or anytime you are speed compliant. Image that for the e60...and the V1 signal displayed in the idrive. I keep hoping..

By the way the Stealth One fits the following for those of you have another BMW in the garage:

1) 7-Series (e38)
2) 5-Series (e39)
3) X5 (e53)
4) 3-Series (e46)
5) Z4 (e85)
6) Mini (MINI)

I always have mine on Capital L mode, it picks up less false signals IMO.

And the concealed display add on is helpful and pretty cool,

because when you hear the beeps you dont have to look up or take your

attention off the road you can just glance at the dash or where ever you want to place it

and its a shorter distance to reach the mute button.

The concealed display add on comes with an extra lighter adapter, 2 fuses, 8 foot

power cord, a mounting plate, and the concealed display module.

All that for $40 bucks well worth it

That sounds like a useful product.

Speaking of custom integration, this reminded me of a really cool custom V1 install that was posted here a while back. I'm sure there are a bunch of newbs who've never seen it so here's a link to the thread and some pics of it:
