tyre wear issue with 166s on non-M5?

I am planning on buying a set of 166s with the same tyre sizes as delivered on the 172s; 245/35/R19 und 275/30/R19. (The 135s will be used as winter wheels and the 166s purchased this year because of the 3% tax increase in Germany next year.)

Having looked through a number of threads about fitting 166s and which tyres to go for, I am interested to hear what tyres other members would now recommend and if I need to fit spacers to avoid additional wear on the rear tyres. The 166 is ET28 and the 172 ET32, i.e. 4mm difference - are these facts correct??

The tyres offered are:
- Dunlop SportMaxx
- Conti SportContact3 ZR
- Falken 452
- Michelin PS2

So which tyre brand?
Is the ET28 vs ET32 (4mm difference) going to be an issue with tyre wear?

4mm won't make a difference. The camber is there whatever and will wear the tyres on the inside whatever you do...

I recommend PS2's - mine seem to be wearing well at the moment. Still 6mm of tread at 5k miles... They are probably the most expensive though...

Thanks for the explanation regarding the camber / 4mm difference.

With regards to the tyres, it's a total difference of ?300 between the cheapest and most expensive. I drive 1000KM+ per week, most of which on the German Autobahns at high speed. The tyres need to be reliable and last, so price in this case is not an issue (especially as there is little difference).


Any other feedback about tyre choice would be appreciated...

Not had much experience of most of those tyres, but most tyres will last well under those conditions because they are not stressed so much as town driving with lots of turning and accelerating. PS2's are very grippy but you might be better with a harder rubber for that sort of driving?

But I guess you're really restricted by the amount of manufacturers that make those sizes... I've got a thing against Dunlops (Sport DSST 01's) so I'd avoid as a protest, I've heard good things about the Falkens and Contis.

I have the Falken 452's on my 166's, so far so good. Done about 4K miles. Will be going back to my RFT's in October for the winter
