I got this email back from BMW uk - regarding the Traffic Message Channel and the iPod adapter -

Thank you for your email to BMW Customer Information dated 21 October 2004.

The 'No signal Message' you are receiving from your Business Satellite
Navigation is due to current functional restrictions within this option. Due
to these current restrictions we have decided to temporarily remove Traffic
Message Channel (TMC). We are currently working with the engineering
department at BMW AG (Germany) to overcome the technical issues and hope to
introduce the TMC function in late 2004 or early 2005. Please may we suggest
that you contact your local authorised BMW dealership, who will be able to
submit a 'PuMA' technical enquiry in order to discover if this option can be
activated in your 5 Series.

We are pleased to announce that an iPod adaptor has recently become
available for the E60 5 Series. The adaptor allows volume to be controlled
through the standard radio controls as well as through the multifunction
volume controls on the steering wheel. It is not possible however to select
tracks via the car audio controls. The part number for this is 65 12 0 153
503 and it is ?39.95 excluding VAT. The adaptor fits into the glove
compartment of the car and requires 1.5 hours of fitting. If you are
interested in having this fitted to your 5 Series, may we suggest again that
you contact your BMW Dealership to get a quote for the instalment and supply
of this part.

We hope we have answered your questions.

Kind Regards

I've had the ipod adapter fitted to my car which I pick up next week. ?112 fitted including VAT which by BMW's standards is quite resonable!

"current functional restrictions within this option" :'( - now THAT has to be BMW quote of the year!! WTF does it mean? I suppose it's a direct translation from the German: Das gadgetten ist knackered. I wonder if our 3-series and X-series brothers have a working TMC system yet?

There seems to be so much on this forum relating to software and peripherals and their lack of compatibility. Do you think that BMW are any worse than anyone else in this department or is it that they are at the cutting edge of technology here? Hard to believe that MP3's and MP3 players have been around for nearly 10 years now, so hardly an excuse any more IMHO.

I'm sure if your search this forum you will find many of us with Business Navigation have it working fine. All it requires is upto data software (13.1 or later) and a 2004-1 dvd or later, slowly dealers in the UK are getting wise to the fact that it works and that the statement about it not working from BMW GB is incorrect. TMC works fine on my BusNav and when using Nav does dynamic rerouting as it should.

good news about the ipod adapter though

BMWGB gave me the same story that TMC would not work on BusNav. After 3 months, 4 letters, several phone calls they finally advised it would work. Booked my car into my dealer 2 months ago and had TMC activated - has been working fine since. Keep up the pressure on your dealer.

I have had my AUX adaptor fitted to my E60 today, works fine. Had to have a new software update and as I was already on 13.3 I am going to ask my delaer what the latest one is.

What will you be using your Aux input for? How good is the sound quality?

I'll be using my connection (scheduled to be installed 11-26-04) for my Sirius JVC KT-SR2000 satellite radio and my IPod. I can't wait. The sound quality better be significantly better than my FM modulator!!

Hey guys,

I've the AUX input installed for my Ipod already a few weeks ago. Everything works perfectly together, even TMC while using AUX input om my bus. nav.

Only key remark, I've you're planning on connecting an Ipod use the Belkin car adapter, charges your Ipod and has an integrated pre-ampli which seriously improves the sound quality.
