On my 20's, I run around 42psi. That's with 245/35/20 and 285/30/20. (Falken 452's)

Your car's recommended tire pressures are noted on the door jamb. 3 questions:
  1. BMW or aftermarket rims?
  2. What diameter wheel and
  3. What profile tire are you running?

You must be pounding through some mighty big potholes?

I also put 40lbs in my stock, 19's. In NYC, it's a must. I'd much rather have a tire blow than crack a wheel, which by the way, I've already done, thanks to putting 40 lbs in my tires. The tire sidewall on one of my 19's last year blew out, but the wheel was perfect. It was the loudest thud ever too. I was convinced my wheel was broken. The wheel place told me the increased pressure saved the wheel.

Like C said - with that low a profile I'd run the "full load" recommended tire pressures. The ride will be harsh. From the BMW Manual for the 19" set up and full load see the bottom right side of the chart - that suggests up to 45lbs psi for the rear!:
