So how much you're ready to pay!

Thanks Vlad. I dismounted my splitter today for the winter and I don't know what to think about the almost stock look...
Flat Eric must be in mourning.

I have 4 166 for winter tyres too.
With the car empty (just the driver) it has only a decent grip. With 4 people on board, skis on the roof and luggages in the boot the car goes very well also with 275.

Whatever I decide, I'm not going for staggered setup with winter wheels. I also think I'm not going up to 19".... maybe 18" though.

And I'm pretty sure the tires would be studded if I'm upgrading... Very highly they would be Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7's. Trust the natives !

I'm a little confused by the answers here -- that's probably to do with it being Sunday evening and my brain being on "stand by mode" rather than anyone else having written something wrong ...

If you are considering 18" 245s, why not consider 19" 245s? Other than tyre price, why not? Or are you only considering going for up to 225s?

The bigger the wheels, the lower the profile (height) of the sizewalls and consequently, the less protection against road hazards. Using 19s will mean that you'd have to use a lower profile tire than you'd use on 18 inch wheels.

OK, that makes sense if you expect to be using bad roads.
Probably yet another stupid question, but hey, I'm on a roll... ... why is this more of a problem in winter than in summer where lots of you drive with 19s or 20s? Do the roads get damaged more in winter or is it the same roads but you can't see the holes / damaged surface because of the snow?

(As I wrote earlier, so far I have been fortunate to drive in areas where there is not that much snow and/or on well prepared main roads.)

While browsing the net for tires I noticed there is not very many 245/35 R19 studded winter tyres available and their prices are very high.

Good question. Where I live, New York City, the roads suck all year long. In fact, in the first 7 months of use, 2 of my 172s were bet and are now being fixed. 19s don't provide much pothole protection at all as I can attest to. But the roads in climates that go through cyces of freeze and thaw are usually even worse in the winter as the freezing and thawing causes huge potholes to form. That my, to me anyway, it is more important during the cold weather to have extra protection against road hazards than in the summer. That's why I use 18s in the winter. Frankly, if I could stomach their appearance (which I can't), I'd go to 17s in the winter. To get a little more pothole protection, I dediced to carry over the 18 inch snows I had on my Infiniti M45 Sport which are 45 series (245/45/18). Recommended size for the E60 in 18s for my car is 245/40/18. But I don't seem to have any rubbing problems so I am happy with the sloghtly taller sidewall.
