Is there room in the centre console tub for a USB port?
I'd like to install the usb port below in the centre console (in the compartment under the arm rest) of my 2009 E60. The only catch is I'm concerned there isn't enough room under or next to the compartment. As you can see the usb charger is quite deep. I don't want to remove the air vents as modern phones can get quite hot when they are charging. Also do I need to remove the entire centre console to achieve this? It looks like the compartment part if the console and not a separate piece.
Factory 08-10 models that had the 6FL option do come with the USB in the center console(where the aux is). Are you sure your 09 has the cold air feed for the console?(I thought bmw deemed it useless and changed it for the LCI models
Mine is a 2008 528xi... I have the cold air feed and no USB. Although, I do believe you have some room to work with in the console. I put my USB in the glove box:
As for charging a phone, I bought the wireless charging pad from ECS Tuning and stuck it under the center console pocket, above the panel for heated seats button. I used epoxy adhesive to attach it. Works perfect, although had to grind some plastic out on the top of the cigarette lighter/ashtray pull out. No need for wires!
