What directions are you following? You don't actually have to remove much if you remove the starter blindly.

Also if you just have the starter and not the crankcase hoses you need to stop and purchase them. They will break during a starter replacement so might as well get the kit that has all the hoses

Yeah, I inadvertently broke my crankcase hose when replacing mine.
