Anyone have any experience replacing the starter themselves in an E60? I believe you will need to take off either the intake manifold or the transmission (!!) to have the starter accessible. If anyone has done this job themselves, or can point me in the direction of someone who has or a writeup, it would be much appreciated.

FYI, the car is a 2004 525i.

The starter can be replaced with out removing the tranny or intake manifold on the M54 engine. Remove the bottom starter bolt from underneath the car. To access the top ones its easiest to do with a sae wrench and a lot of patience. You will need to remove the rain trays, strut brace, and some other minor stuff to access the top bolts. A rebuilt bosch starter was $168

Great information, thanks! By SAE wrench do you mean a loose-fitting standard, rather than metric wrench, or did you mean a stubby wrench?

A standard wrench actually fits pretty snug on the star patter bolt. I can't remember which size atm (I have more info on one of my prior post regarding starter problems)

I'm about to tackle the starter on my 2006 530xi (N52/Auto). Does anyone have any updated info or advice they'd like to share? I'd really love to do this without removing the manifold and excessive cursing.

Your kind consideration is much appreciated. Cheers!

4reagan, did you get around to replacing your starter, just wondering if you can share some info. The starter on my 08 528i sounds pretty weak and will be replacing it soon. Thanks

Yes I did and even took pictures, meant to do a DIY, just fell off my radar. If you have specific questions please let me know, otherwise I'll get this DIY put together.
