[QUOTE=Guam135i;1579783]I am in the same boat, How many miles do you have before your starter failed? All the crap above the starter has to go away like the cowl, brace, cover, air box, etc.
The car I changed had 65,000 klm so nothing
The cowl and covers etc is the slowest part
Once you have got to your inlet manifold its fast
but remember the three things or maybe four
Disconnect your battery
look out for the rear oil pipe at the rear of the engine that runs from the rocker cover to to manifold
It becomes brittle and breaks so if your not careful you will have to replace it
change the inlet manifold seals when you have it apart
and gently gently pull the manifold out of the way to replace your starter
Its real easy if you just go slow and steady!
once its out of the way you can get your arms down between the motor and manifold.
You do not need to disconnect anything from the manifold or remove it from the car.

I hope I am not too late to help you
By memory!
I used an ordinary 8mm ring spanner ( they will fit it fine)
I also came up from under the car after jacking it up. I Undid the bolt from under the car as I was trying to get the starter out and not remove the inlet manifold.
but I am sure you will be able to do it from the top with an 8mm ring spanner just he same
PM me if I can help at all.

there are many sockets that will fit a torx head bolt.
I had a good think about it today
I was able to refit the bolt and tighten it from the top even though I had removed it from the bottom. with an 8mm spanner
Sorry i dont live close or i would come to help you.
I am not worried about you fitting the starter as you will get that but that plastic oil breather hose on the rear of the rocker cover is the brittle one that breaks
good luck and PM me anytime and ill try and help if I can
Oh and putting it back together is a lot easier!!

True! But sad part is mine worked for a day and now it just clicks. I'll try to see if it is the battery. BTW I bought a brande new TYC brand starter only one available locally

HI
Trying to change the starter motor in my '10 528i. I wanted to remove the whole intake manifold which required removing the throttle body. Unfortunately I'm not sure the plug to the throttle body is separating correctly and I don't want to force it. If you can accept an email I'll send you a pic of what I've got. I'd be curious to know your opinion whether I've got a problem or not before proceeding..
Thanks
