Stale Air?

When I unlock my car after it has been sitting for several hours, I sometimes hear a rush of air coming from somewhere when I hit unlock. And then when I turn the car on, a quick burst of stale-smelling air comes in the cabin. This is very brief and is gone within a few seconds. I don't believe I have the residual air setting or whatever it is turned on. Any idea what this is?
