That's a M5 steering wheel. What is your make year model? There are two specific things to look for when doing the retrofit. Pre-09/2005 steering wheels are different from Post09/2005+ steering wheels. Make sure you are buying the right one or it will not fit. I have seen Post09/2005+ steering wheels modified to fit pre-09/2005 model cars, but it's a biatch to get it right. Better off buying the right one from the get go.
As for the heating function, I dont think your going to find a M5 steering wheel with heating for pre-09/2005 make year, as I beleive it came out in 2008+ models. So, if your car is pre-09/2005 and you want heating/M5 paddles steering wheel, your going to have to modify the steering wheel.
For the paddles, you can make it work even though your current steering wheel does not have this feature. It will require splicing the wores at your gearshifter, but it doable.
Another option for your paddles retrofit is this:

if i just get the steering wheel with the paddle shifters is it as simple as just installing or some programming or extra wiring has to be done? so i guess i have no choice but to lose the heating option if i do this retrofit. (bummer) still worth it though. if the shifters are too much of an hassle i will just get the steering wheel without paddles.

AFAIK, you can get a regular sport steering wheel with paddles and with heating. Just the M5 ones might be an issue. The steering wheel will work with out programing. If you use the paddles you will just need to make a splicing connection or buy the harness. The paddles do not require any programing. This was one of the eaiser and fun retrofits.

The wire splicing is not only need to be done by the shifter but behind & inside the steering ... if you buy the hacked steering coil spring from the link Akalius provide above you'll be ready to go ... replace your current coil spring and it has all the wire ready to plug into the shifter ... all you need is the steering wheel w/ paddles.
I'm not using M5 steering wheel just SMG steering wheel when I upgraded w/ paddles ... it provided the same functionality ... I like it better since I can do up/down shift from each paddles w/ one hand.
AFAIK The hacked coil spring wiring loom re-use the heating terminal point to wire the Step shifter that's why you'll loose heating ability.
