Are there any benefits from adding a splitter to the front bumper or is
it just asthetics?

I thought maybe it would help keep the front end down at high speeds.

Most of the splitters do help with aerodynamics but not anything noticeable for most,

Yes, that's the idea. But, mostly they just look really really cool!

Its all for looks.
There is no way the designers of the splitters would waste time and money for R&D.

Actually the 2 most widely used splitters are made by Hamman and Hartge, the two biggest european tuners in the market.
they do TONS of R&D on their vehicles. they're very reputable and have been around longer than most companies.

correct. aerodynamically, splitters are used for more downforce at the front at higher speeds to prevent the front end lifting up. but as dbae said, not really noticeable for most.
