Hey Rudy, whats your plan for the 550 in the winter? Different wheels altogether or snows on the 172's?
They don't make 19" snows, or at least Tirerack doesn't sell them.

I can't speak for Rudy, but I picked up a set of Dunlop M3's on 18" generic rims.

As of last week, they had a steal on runflat Dunlop Graspics, at about $110 per tire.

I have the Blizzak LM-25's and they rock! They're a little more hard core than the Dunlop M3's, but if you're in constant snow and ice, nothing beats them outside of studded tires.
Do you know the difference between the LM-22 and LM-25? Tirerack only shows the LM-22 for my car. The description look pretty much the same. One on my uncle's has Blizzaks on his car. He speaks so highly of them, and the prices all seem close, that I was just going to go with Blizzaks.

if you dont drive the car in 2-3"+ snow, then I wouldnt bother. All seasons do just fine if you have common sense behind the wheel in the snow. Newer RWD cars do fine in the snow with all seasons, but of course, its a no brainer that if you consistently drive your car in the deep snow, get snow tires.

I am not saying snow tires dont rock for snow/ice but look at cars 10 or 20 years ago or more. Before any of this stability control/yaw sensing business was so refined in almost all cars but especially good in the bimmers and some otheres (or so I read)-I am sure they are all very similar by now.

I mean people got by with snows or often all seasons 20 years ago in the snow with poorly balanced cars etc and no stability or traction control.

Now we have this high tech computer monitoring every milsecond of wheel splippage and such.

How much better off are wenow with all this technology? Has there been any decrease in winter acciedents or anything to show any of this techno stuff is actuall saving lives or cars
I think back then the rear wheel drive cars were tough in the snow. I think you pretty much were required to have snow tires or put it in storage. There was a front wheel drive revolution going on in the entry level cars too. Front wheel drive was nice in the snow when a car was new, but one the suspension wore out a bit, the back end would not be very stable. I had several of these FWDs in college and didn't like spinning out at all.

My old 328 was a bit loose on the snow and ice last winter when we took it to a state swim meet out in an area of MI where they didn't use as much salt. We were up early and the car would drive straight for 5 seconds then have a huge tug left. It was enough to fell like you were going to spin, but then it would correct and start the process over. This was at 20 MPH too. That trip lead to a series of events and considerations that got me to the 545i I picked up last week. On the 328, the dealer said the front tires were worn funny, so those were replaced early and we did an alignment. Then I had the wheels straightened and repainted. It still wasn't right, so I tried another alignment. Still not right, so I picked up the 545i. The 328 just not feeling right, plus turning 40, plus discontent with the new 335s and here I am in the E60 forum.

On the tires, I just want this one to feel solid in the winter, so snow tires it is. Our other car is a 2006 CTS which was worse than the 328 in the snow.

OK. I'm convinced.

One of them is a newer pattern, I think the LM-25. Blizzaks are great, highly recommended.

I have the Dunlop M3's and they're fantastic. Im not quite as hard core as Calton. Hey Rudy, whats your plan for the 550 in the winter? Different wheels altogether or snows on the 172's?

All the best
I'm using my setup from the 2004 car which I copied from Lomag's setup -- Dunlop M3's with ASA JH3 style wheels.

Snow tires needed on a 5?-asa_jh3_ci3_l.jpg

They're 17" so I have good protection from potholes, etc. Also, I had to have the tire pressure sensors installed in them this year but now I should be good to go for a while...
