Snow Tire & Rim Recommendation for '08 535i

I have a 2008 535i with the sports package. I live in Chicago and need to get snow tires and rims. What are the recommended sizes for both rims and tires for this specific setup? Currently, I have 245/40-18's on the front and 275/35-18's on the back. Can I go to a smaller diameter like a 17"? I have heard mixed reviews that going to a smaller size can interfere with other systems on the car. Help!!!
