Don't forget my 550 was pre LCI, would be good to see that the LCIs do have it.
Again, I can't yet say if it's an LCI thing or a software version thing until more people chime in. My car was delivered in July 2008 so it's possible that I have a version of software that's slightly ahead of the car you used to have.

My best guess, however, is that it's an LCI thing and not just software...

I don't think it's LCI dependent but rather ilevel dependent.

Are you saying ilevel is the progman version or something else? (I don't think I've heard the term 'ilevel' before...)

Ja, same thing AFAIK. I've noticed that BMW NA people don't use the term Progman at all but say ilevel.

Another point in the debate. I have nav in my 5 and my kids have a portable unit for their cars. Definitely more bells and whistles with the portables, but another issue around here to consider. Scum bags steal the portables like mad around here. Easy money in the pawn shops for junkies. Even if you remove the unit and lock it in your trunk, if they see the windshield mount you may end up with a broken window and trunk lock.

I will enjoy the built in models with less accessories.

I have a TomTom and now have an E61 with Business Sat Nav (no map, just arrows and voice).
I've had the TomTom for 3 years and the BMW 3 months.
I've got to say, I don't miss any of the bells and whistles on the TomTom when I'm in my car. In fact, I think in some ways having the 3D map is more distracting than helpful. For simple "get me to my destination" the BMW built in nav is all I need. Downsides are cost of original option, cost of DVD updates, lack of speed camera locations and not being able to use it in any other car.
The BMW does also have TMC to route me around traffic jams that works brilliantly which the TomTom doesn't.
Would I have it as an option on a new car? If you can afford a new BMW 5 series then the cost of sat nav as an option shouldn't be an issue. Is it value for money compared to something like the TomTom? No, not really. But as I say it is very good and is built in which is why I bought a second hand car with it.
