Most run-flat tres require a wheel with a EH2 hump. BMW has been incorporating this in their wheels for quite a while now.

Continental is advertising here that there new run-flat tires dont require this EH2 Hump. Quote from press release this month "unlike our competators tires"

The EH2 hump is what helps keep the sidewalls on the rim when the wheel fails

You can fit normal tires to a wheel with EH2, but a run-flat that needs it wont wok on a wheel without it ( it will fit, but will fail to stay on the rim in a blowout )

This all was confirmed to me by a leading tire specialist here

"Whereas certain systems marketed by competitors require special wheels, the run-flat systems from Continental can be used on conventional wheels."

This is not correct. The wheel is not different. The same wheel can run RunFlat and regular tires. There is no extra lip on wht wheel.

The Dunlop runflat tire on the other hand has a rib on the sidewall to help protect the wheel in the event of a flat.

noonehome you are incorrect. The wheels do have an additional inner lip. I've seen it several times now when my car has been in the tyre shop for puncture repare and tyre replacement. The tyre guys say it is a nightmare job to get the tyre over this inner rim to get it off and it is this feature combined with the stiffened sidewalls that keps the tyre in place when flat. You cannot fit the Dunlop runflats to a standard rim as they will simply come off the rim if flat without this extra safety inner rim.

Thanks for info guys Since there are a lot of differing opinions, I guess I will go with a wheel that specfies "run flats only", or change both wheels and tires to non run flats. I'm leaning towards the latter.

The run-flat wheels can take normal tires no problem, as I said earlier BMW have been making them for some time for cars without run flats

The problem comes when you want to put run-flat tires on, then you need a specific wheel unless you get the new continental ones

If you go to tirerack.com, you can check the prices, and how your car will look with various wheels. I've dealt with them for over 20 years and they are the best. Their price includes mounting and dynamic balancing if you buy wheels and tires. Here is a pic of my car with the BBS RS-GT's:

Hi f6maniac ! ! !

That is one more cool looking set up your have! Can I ask you a question? Now you have an e60 also, right, and does your aftermarket wheels ride as good, if not better than you OEMs did?

Also, approx. how much did the rim's cost? (I really like them!)

I have heard NO negativesfrom the BMW forums about the tire rack, all positives!!! : )

I know it is hard located a good vendor, but looks like you did! (I got a rotten vendor when I purchased my replica wheels for my e60! Oh well live, and learn, I suppose LOL)

Thanks in Advance.

That's ok, I was just curious, but if that is your Bimmer, your wheels look great!
