C, like fantastic5 said, i too did feel a butt dyno difference but also dont know how much of it was mental. where i did feel (or thought i did at least) a difference was mostly after 80 leading into triple digits. at the time when i was at Eloy's, he said if they went into production that they would probably be about $100-$150 per scoop.
It would probably have helped if I read the 2nd page of this thread .

Thanks N. It looks cool though, but if it does nothing, I'll pass.

very debatable. for sure it does direct more air into that duct, and the end of that duct does lead to the area where the AFE intake is (on my car it does, but only about 3/4 of the opening is exposed because of the seal from the AFE) but gains if even any its not too much.

you know you want to....

edit: Navin, sorry for hijacking your thread

No worries, you are actually keeping the thread at the top of the list and generating more interest.
Hope i can make it to the Angelus Crest meet and talk to Eloy about working on one for the 545.

Jerry,
You have a Step so being the 545i/550i prototype isn't going to work for you. He needs a SMG/6speed for the Dyno Dynamics. I'm sure he'll give you one for free after he fabricates one since you won it at the Central Cali Meet.

Spoke to Eloy at RPI and he said that he can make a ram air scoop for the 545s if there are atleast 20 people interested in it, Dyno it and design as required for the 545
or
If the number is lesser he can do a production run of just the one side of the scoop they make for the m5 and sell it to us for $100 although he cannot gaurantee the hp gains in this case.

Is the intake tube behind the front grille different on the M5 compared to the 545? (if we consider the right side alone)
Shouldn't the amount of air coming into the intake tube be the same for both cars if the design of the grille and the scoop is the same ?
The way the engines breathe and utilize the air coming in might be different hence different hp gains but the purpose of the scoop should have been achieved.
Am i correct in making this assumption ?
Count me in on this one.

Well, no wonder it didn't show any gains. It's not designed correctly. It WILL show power gains on the 530i and even the 525i. It needs to be closer to the centerline, the physical form of the scoop needs to be redesigned (aiming to acheive less turbulence and smoother airflow), the whole scoop itself needs to be completely sealed to it's mounting point, and the diameter of the piping needs to be slightly decreased. There could also be an integrated velocity stack. I can give my number to RPI so they can use my car and I can help them with a more effecient design. Do they have a website or does anyone have a phone number for them?

Seems like the two would complement each other. The ram air scoop would allow you to feed the motor a denser charge of air, thus increasing power (with the right amount of fuel added to compensate of course). It seems logical to me, then that you would want to be a little methodical with this scenario. First, add a cold air intake (AFE, DINAN, ETC.). Then, add the ram air scoop. After that, get the ecu remapped. That should do the trick, being that the remapped ecu will be able to see the extra air flow and be able to correspondingly adjust air/fuel ratios, ignition timing, and the like to take advantage of it. I have never seen a picture of the AFE cold air intake before, but if the diameter of the piping was decreased by say, 3mm, while adding the ram air scoop the effect should be that velocity would be increased while at the same time increasing volume. Good response, more power, better fuel economy.
The factory intake is a true cold air set up. Anything that rids the instake system of a sealed enclosure is NOT a cold air intake. The factory set up is sealed and can only get air from the outside of the engine bay. Many intake manufacturers call induction type intake systems "cold air" intakes but in reality, they are "hot air" intakes. Your idea works to some extent. The scoops help bring cooler fresh air into the area of the filters. This allows from great response and nice midrange. The problem is when you are at speeds, an induction filter will suffer compared to a panel filter with air being forced through it. With an induction filter, the air going into your engine is only what the engine can suck in. There is NO ram affect at all since you cant ram air into a 360deg filter.
