Had some very bad break squeal noise at low speeds even thou the iDrive said I had 11k miles left on the front pads and more on the back. When I took it to the dealer they said it was the break sensor but also that I need both pads and rotors. The car is 2004 CPO and now past the original maintenance warrenty and they wanted $1400 to change rotors, pads and sensors for both front and rear. I complained about the cost for sensors since there is a service bulletin about them and eventually the dealer said they would split the cost of new pads and sensors (but not rotors) with me, so I said OK and had them done for $400 out of pocket.
My question now has to do with the rotors. When do I know they need to be changed and what will this cost me? The iDrive only reports break pad life... is this a good guage for the rotors too?
Thanks

the dealership should have reset your i-drive to let you know when it is needed or next time you hear squealing.

btw, it's brakes not breaks.

I don't trust the computer neither the dealer says. Just trust yourself and how you see/feel driving. Feel how the car feels.

BMW recommends that the rotors should be changed every time the pads are changed. My local dealers parts advisor told me, on his BMW he replaces the rotors every other time the pads needed to be changed. My brakes where rcently squeling so I brought it in to carmax where my car is warentied. They said the same thing about my brakes. Instead of paying the outragous price I decided to do it myself. I bought the pads and sensor for the front brakes, and went ahead to install it. When I inspected my brake pads to be replaced, rotors to be turned, there was still 2/3rds life left on it and rotors still in excellent condition. WTF, it wasn't even close to being due for replacement! The job is not difficult just a little time consuming. If I was in your shoes I would have a second look before paying anything that expensive. Brakes to me are considered a DIY.

for example:
if i drive say no brakes need to be changed for 20k
but u hear noise - take to dealer or independent shop to check it out.
bottom line is sounds just dont' pop up. like miguex said, trust ur FEELING.

oh man, you should have just bought the maint service and had it covered under that. it can't be much more than 1400$ you paid plus you would have gotten everything else with it.
the dealership should have reset your i-drive to let you know when it is needed or next time you hear squealing.

Yeah, Brakes not Breaks. So much for spell checkers, they still can't stop me from making stupid mistakes. I guess "thats tha brakes" LOL!

The next time you come accross this issue, this is what I would do.

Used to be a DIYer, but never felt comfortable doing brakes. I did find a very nice step-by-step with photographs for complete brake job for the E39 and it looked very straightforward and no brake line bleeding required (the part I was always leary about).
