I plan to switch from my runflats to conventional tires when the current tires turn ugly/noisy. I'm thinking of Pilot Sport AS or Yokohama AVS DB. Without a spare, I'll probably get the Dunlop tire sealant that comes with an air compressor just in case.

I have Pilot Sports on my other car and I'm quite happy with it. But I thought I'd try the Yokohama tires as they are supposed to be quiet. Anyone has any experience with the Yokohamas?

Something to think about - my dealer told me that going to non-runflat tires would increase your chances of wheel damage, as the runflats have thicker sidewalls. made sense to me.

I have just the opposite feeling. I think the thicker walls of the run flats have saved me from curb rash on several occasions. So far, my rims are still pristine. Now the last Bimmer had curb rash in several places.

Incidentally, I don't know where you are in Texas, but the Lone Star BMWCCA chapter had a technical session today at Autoscope in Plano and the subject was curb rash repair. A mobile repair service refinished a wheel on an M3 coupe while we watched and joked with the owner about his driving skills. The refinishing was quick and matched well. They charge $75-85 per wheel. I am thinking about giving my son a refinishing for four wheels on my old 540 which he now owns. He'll be in D for the holidays.

I am contemplating the sport package on my new E60. Can anyone tell me if the tires can be changed to standard tires from run flats on the same rims?

Also, what do you think of doing a ED in January? (Not my first choice but the timing works for my wife's schedule).

Thanks in advance for all your support.

Absolutely you can change to non-runflat tires. Yes, runflats may offer some minor additional protection for your wheels from damage because of their thicker sidewalls, but how often in your life have you hit something hard enough to bend a rim? Personally I've only done it twice, and that was hard enough so that I bent my suspension as well - runflats would not have made any difference.

Switching from the runflats to a top-notch Maximum Performance tire is probably the single biggest performance enhancement you can make to your car. You can weigh that against the possibility of hitting something hard enough to bend your rim with these tires, but not quite hard enough to bend it if you had the runflats. The chances of doing that are pretty remote, but even if you do, the cost of the wheel will be more than offset by the improvement in your car's performance.

^^^^Run-flats also "run-flat". That's something to consider as well.

Delivery in Jan will be cold.? In Bavaria there is likely to be snow on the ground.? It still will not be bad.? It seems to get bad in this area around teh end of Feb.

Sorry for late reply, was in Berlin for the last four days. No time to check the forum.

As Kigerka said, it's cold. It depends on where you want to go. If you want to go south and drive in the Alps you NEED winter tires and maybe even chains...
I wouldn't do ED in January, even February can be cold. I would prefer March, but do you really want to wait that long? I doubt it...

No, I don't want to wait that long especially since wife has off 1st week of January. Say, what's the German holiday that week that has the delivery center closed Jan. 6 an 7?

BTW, Iceman, have you any suggestions on where I might drive to avoid snow? My route is open, just need to end up at a drop off location.

We'll tentatively be flying into Frankfurt, would enjoy meeting if you're in town. Anticipating arrival 2 Jan 05.

Plenty of time. Will PM you when plans are set.

Check out Costa Del Sol or the Sun Coast in Spain or Southern Italy. Those are warm areas, but I don't know if they are warm enough. Or why not go skiing in Switzerland? Good luck.
