Remap vs Tuning box
Are there disadvantages about getting a tuning box over a remap? I know the main advantage is that you can take it off anytime.
Im getting a tuning box because my worst fear has come reality. The dealer will have problems loading software updates on your car if it has been remapped. This has happened to member Gav530d
Someone told me that a remap is better for the engine because it gives more smoother power and better fuel consumption. Is this right?

There has been quite a lot written about this.
The only piggy back removeable box for the E60 at the moment works on fuel pressure only which is not the best way of achieving more power/torque but having said that I am happy with mine. It takes 5 minutes to disconnect in the event that there is a conflict during software upgrades.
The only other option at the moment for the E60 is a re-map which involves some surgery on the ECU which I chose not to do for garantee purposes.
In the older BMW diesels the piggy back units did full re-mapping and were removeable. These adjusted many parameters not just fuel pressure and are a better solution.
Hope this helps.

My 530d was remapped yesturday by Sanspeed in kent, a superchips dealer.
The difference is astounding and it only took an hour and a half to do.
My dealer has told me that since the problem I had with my car originally they will only do recoding on a main service, all I will do is get Sanspeed to put the car back to standard before it goes back to the dealer then reload the remapped ofter its been service.
525d, if I was you find a local superchips dealer as they have extensive experience with BMW diesals.
Cheers
Gavin

If it only took 1/2 hour to do, I'd suggested that it wasn't "remapped" as such (to me, "remapped" implies a custom mapping, created specifically for your car), but that a generic upgraded map was applied - am I right?
An hour and half does sound abit quick.
You have got alot of bhp from your car but not a lot of torque. I would like a bit more than 50nm of torque. Gav530d, do you have a dyno of your car?

I believe the remap is a standard remap from superchips, the offical figures quoted by them is a 47bhp and 97nm increase. In my experience many tuners claim they use custom remaps but they are normally a standard one which they "may" tweek.
Sanspeed were unable to rolling road test the car as it was too late in the day, however, after xmas I will be going back to rr the car plus tweek the remap.
Cheers
