Actually I don't think you are crazy! I would ask the same questions and actually I would really love to find a way to get the paddles to use them with my Steptronic...
Anyways, the problem is that the normal SMG paddles are going both ways, up and down, the M paddles are going on way, right side up, left side down. So you would need to modify the software to get to work - then you could just buy an actual M5 steering wheel (what will be available as soon as the Emmy is available) and it would work... I guess... Modifying your steering wheel to get the M paddles on it... I don't think you can... And again... Still software mods needed...

Those paddles are made by Strassentech..and they sell in the $400 range. Mad expensive, but very nice.

My Ride: 2005 MY 545i Sport Saloon. 2006 MY Alpina B3S Convertible. 2006 MY Brabus Smart 42 Cabrio. 2006 MY AM DB9 Coupe.
FYI
The steering column slip ring on the E60s etc.. are completely different to all previous BMWs that shared the same slip ring (including M3 SMG).
For this reason plus others, it is not possible to put on the M3SMG wheel on a E60. Also, the electronics inside the multifunction wheels and paddle buttons within the steering wheel are totally different and come in several versions depending if you have steering wheel heating, smg etc..
Having said all this, and I mentioned to a few at the Belgium meet today, I am working on this starting this week as I am back in the UK to pick up a spare SMG E60 wheel, plus extra paddles and control units so that I can disassemble them and start work on the circuitry inside.
I will post the fruits of my labour in due course - but I think it will be later in Dec before I am ready to do so.

If you make a search on e46fanatics.com for "steptronic paddle" or something along those lines, a lot of threads will come up about this. Someone by the name Vince has a kit, but none for E60 yet..but it's $$ anyhow, $400US.
